Katadyn water filter: squeeze bottle or hand pump?

Quick answer
Katadyn makes two very different filters for most people. The BeFree is a soft, collapsible bottle with a 0.1 micron hollow-fiber filter that Katadyn rates at up to 2 liters a minute and 1,000 liters of life; you clean it by shaking. The Hiker Pro is a hand pump that Katadyn says delivers a liter a minute, adds activated carbon for taste and lasts up to 1,150 liters. Neither lists virus removal, so CDC's filter-then-disinfect advice still applies.

Figures are from Katadyn's product pages, checked October 2026; the 1.0L figures are from Katadyn's Black Edition listing of the same filter.
What they remove, and what they do not
- BeFree: Katadyn says its 0.1 micron filter removes bacteria, cysts and sediment.
- Hiker Pro: Katadyn lists bacteria, Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and says the activated carbon reduces unpleasant tastes.
- Viruses: neither page lists virus removal. CDC says filters with a pore size of 0.3 micron or smaller remove bacteria and parasites but not viruses.
- Filter, then disinfect: CDC says the next best option after boiling is to filter and then disinfect; see our water purification tablets guide.
- Chemicals: CDC warns that boiling or disinfecting cannot make water with harmful chemicals safe; use another source.
Squeeze bottle or pump?
- BeFree for speed and weight: fill the soft flask, screw on the filter and drink or squeeze into a pot; Katadyn says the flask packs small enough for running shorts or a fishing vest.
- Hiker Pro for lakes, rivers and creeks: Katadyn says it pumps water from those sources straight into a bottle or pack reservoir with its quick-connect fittings.
- Groups: at about 1 liter a minute, the Hiker Pro fills four 1 liter bottles in about four minutes.
- Turbid water: Katadyn says the Hiker Pro's filter protector cleans easily in the field, for quick access even with cloudy water.
- Camp volume: Katadyn sells a BeFree Gravity Upgrade Kit that connects a BeFree filter element to its 6 L or 10 L water bags.
Filter life in plain arithmetic
- BeFree: 1,000 liters at 2 liters of drinking water a day is about 500 days for one person.
- Hiker Pro: 1,150 liters for a family of four drinking 2 liters each a day is about 144 days.
- Water quality matters: Katadyn says both capacities depend on the water you filter.
- Occasional use: Katadyn calls the BeFree 1.0L Black Edition suitable for occasional use, so heavy users should plan spare filter elements.
Cleaning and care
- BeFree: Katadyn says its EZ-Clean Membrane cleans by shaking or swishing the filter in water, with no backflushing or tools.
- Hiker Pro: clean the filter protector in the field; Katadyn sells maintenance kits and replacement cartridges.
- Materials: Katadyn lists the BeFree as 100% PVC and BPA free.
- Keep clean and dirty sides apart so untreated water does not reach the drinking side.
- Storage: dry the parts before packing them away; see the maker's instructions for cold-weather care.
Which Katadyn for an emergency kit
- Go-bag: a BeFree 1.0L is light and fast; pair it with disinfection tablets for virus risk.
- Car or trail: the BeFree 0.6L fits pockets and small packs at 59 g.
- Household during an outage: the Hiker Pro pumps into bottles and reservoirs for several people.
- Other options: compare our LifeStraw, Grayl and portable water filter guides.
