Safety
The content on Plain Prepper is general information. It does not replace the maker's manual, local building and electrical codes, or advice from a licensed professional.
- Generators make carbon monoxide, which can kill. Operate them outdoors at least 20 feet from homes and buildings, with exhaust pointing away from doors, windows and vents. Never operate them in a house, garage, basement, shed or other enclosed space. Keep working carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Shut the generator off and let it cool before refueling.
- Fuel-burning heaters and stoves need the location, ventilation and clearances specified by their manuals. Use an appliance indoors only when its rating, instructions and local rules permit it. A carbon monoxide alarm does not make an outdoor appliance safe indoors.
- Connecting a generator to house wiring needs a transfer switch or interlock installed by a licensed electrician. Never backfeed through an outlet.
- Home canning should follow tested USDA methods.
- First aid and trauma gear calls for appropriate training. Call 911 in an emergency.
Read the CPSC generator precautions and NFPA generator safety guidance. Each buying guide lists sources for its product-specific precautions.
