About Plain Prepper

Plain Prepper is a small independent publication about getting ready for the emergencies people actually face: power outages, storms, winter weather, boil water notices and time away from stores.

How we work

• We start from what people search for when they are getting ready, and answer that question first.
• We read makers' specifications and manuals, and guidance from agencies such as Ready.gov, FEMA, the CDC, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the EPA and the USDA. Every guide lists its sources and the date we checked them.
• We do not run hands-on product tests and we never claim to. We say what the published specs support, and where they stop.
• We point to features and product types that fit a real need, and we say who should skip a product.

Calm, not doom

Being prepared is ordinary. Our aim is a household that can ride out a few days to a few weeks without stress, not fear.
