Battery charger and jump starter: two very different kinds of 2-in-1

Quick answer
There are two kinds. A plug-in charger with engine start, such as the Schumacher SC1281 (100 A), needs a wall outlet and a battery still in the car, and Schumacher's manual limits cranking to 7 seconds with a 3 minute cool-down. A charger with a built-in lithium pack, such as the Battery Tender Charge N Start 4120 (4 A charger, 1200 A pack), works away from an outlet. In a power outage, only the built-in pack type can start a car without a generator.

Figures are from Schumacher's and Battery Tender's product pages and the SC1281 manual, checked October 2026.
How plug-in engine start works
- It boosts the car's own battery: Schumacher's manual says using engine start without a battery installed could damage the vehicle's electrical system.
- Charge first: the SC1281 charges for 2 minutes before it is ready; in extreme cold, or if the battery reads under 2 volts, the manual says to charge for 5 minutes before cranking.
- Crank limits: crank until the engine starts or 7 seconds pass; after repeated cranking the charger enforces a 3 minute cool-down.
- Know when to stop: the manual says if a charged battery still will not start the car, do not use engine start and have the battery checked; if the engine turns over but will not run, the problem is elsewhere.
- Power: Schumacher lists 120 V AC input at 4 A continuous and 20 A intermittent for the SC1281.
How a built-in jump pack works
- Portable: the CNS 4120's internal lithium pack starts gas engines up to 6.0 L and diesels up to 4.0 L without a second vehicle or an outlet, Battery Tender says.
- Crank limits: Battery Tender says to crank for up to 5 seconds per attempt with 30 seconds between attempts.
- Stays ready: while plugged in, the unit switches between charging the vehicle battery and topping up its internal pack.
- Two clamp sets: one for charging, one for jumping; Battery Tender says they are not interchangeable.
- Protection: Battery Tender lists spark-proof connection, reverse polarity, short-circuit and overcurrent protection on both clamp sets.
Which type fits an emergency plan
- Garage at home with power: a plug-in engine-start charger also maintains the battery, tests the alternator and handles 6 V equipment.
- Outage or roadside: a plug-in unit cannot help without power, so a built-in pack, or a separate jump pack, is the one that works; see our best portable car battery jump starter guide.
- Generator owners: a plug-in charger can run from a generator, which must itself run outdoors and away from windows.
- Experience level: Schumacher calls its manual wheeled SC1446 a tool for experienced users who want full control; the automatic SC1281 decides the charge for you.
- Seasonal vehicles: any of these can maintain a stored battery; see our smart battery charger guide for maintainers without engine start.
Hooking up safely, from the SC1281 manual
- Ventilate the area, and keep sparks and flames away; batteries make explosive gases.
- Remove rings and watches; Schumacher warns a lead-acid battery can weld a ring to metal.
- Unplug first: connect and disconnect clamps only with the charger off and unplugged.
- Negative-ground vehicles: red clamp to the positive post, black clamp to a heavy metal part of the frame or engine block away from the battery, never to fuel lines or sheet metal.
- Disconnect in order: unplug the AC cord, remove the chassis clamp, then the battery clamp.
- Never charge a frozen battery.
Using the built-in tester
The SC1281 starts in tester mode. Schumacher's chart for a 12 V battery:
- 12.8 V or more: charged.
- 12.2 to 12.7 V: needs charging.
- Under 12.2 V: discharged.
For the alternator test, the manual says to run the engine at 2,000 rpm for 30 seconds with headlights on; 13.4 to 14.6 volts means the alternator is working, and readings outside that range call for a qualified technician. Schumacher notes a surface charge can make the battery reading look better than it is. Do not use desulfation mode on lithium batteries, the manual warns.
What to look for when you buy

- Can a battery charger jump start a car?
- Some can: models with an engine start mode, like the SC1281, boost the car's battery while plugged into a wall outlet.
- Can I use engine start with the battery removed?
- No; Schumacher's manual warns it could damage the vehicle's electrical system.
- How long can I crank with a charger engine start?
- The SC1281 manual says up to 7 seconds, with a 3 minute cool-down after repeated cranking.
- Which type works in a power outage?
