Choosing a smart battery charger

Quick answer
A smart battery charger reads the battery and adjusts voltage and current through several stages, instead of pushing a fixed current. For preparedness, pick one that covers your largest battery's amp-hours and every chemistry you own. CTEK's NXT 5 NA puts out 4.3 A for 12 V batteries from 1.2 to 160 Ah, with LiFePO4 and AGM modes and temperature compensation. Small maintainers around 1 A suit stored batteries. Bigger chargers recover a flat car or deep cycle battery faster.
Charger or maintainer?
Both are smart chargers, sized for different jobs. A maintainer keeps a healthy, stored battery topped up for months. Battery Tender sizes its 750 mA Junior for small powersports batteries. A charger recovers a battery that is low or flat in a reasonable time. Battery Tender points owners of full-size truck batteries in the 60 to 80 Ah range, large AGM batteries and 6 volt systems to its 4 A Power Tender series rather than its small maintainers. If you only need to keep a stored generator battery ready, see our battery maintainer guide.
How long will it take? Rough math
Divide the amp-hours you need to put back by the charger's amps for a rough floor on charge time. Real time is longer, because chargers taper the current as the battery fills.
| Battery | Amp-hours to replace | At 1.25 A | At 4.3 A |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example: 50 Ah car battery, half drained | About 25 Ah | About 20 hours | About 6 hours |
| Example: 100 Ah deep cycle, half drained | About 50 Ah | About 40 hours | About 12 hours |
That gap is why a maintainer is a poor tool for recovering a flat battery after an outage, and a 4 A or larger charger is worth having.
Match every battery chemistry you own
A household may have several kinds: a flooded lead-acid car battery, an AGM in a newer car or generator, and LiFePO4 in a power station or solar bank. Each needs the right charge profile.
- CTEK NXT 5 NA: 12 V lead-acid and LiFePO4, plus an AGM optimisation mode for start/stop vehicle batteries.
- Battery Tender's Junior Multi-Chemistry: a selector between lead-acid and LiFePO4 profiles.
Pick the mode before connecting. Battery Tender notes lithium batteries require a fundamentally different charging profile than lead-acid.
Cold weather and storage features
Chargers often live in garages and sheds. CTEK lists the NXT 5 NA for ambient temperatures from -4 to 122 degrees F. It has built-in compensation that adjusts charging voltage to the ambient temperature, plus an IP65 rating against dust and water jets. Battery Tender rates its Junior from 5 to 122 degrees F. Both ranges cover most garages. Remember that the battery itself may have tighter limits. LiFePO4 batteries like LiTime's stop accepting charge below 32 degrees F.
Reconditioning modes: what to expect
CTEK says the NXT 5 has patented desulphation and reconditioning modes that restore battery life. These modes aim at lead-acid batteries that have sat discharged. Treat them as a way to recover a neglected battery, not a guarantee. A battery that will not hold a charge after a full cycle should be tested and replaced before you count on it in an emergency.
What to look for when you buy
4 A class multi-chemistry smart charger (example: CTEK NXT 5 NA)
Best for: Cars, generators and 12 V LiFePO4 or AGM batteries up to 160 Ah
CTEK lists 4.3 A output, 1.2 to 160 Ah capacity, LiFePO4 support, AGM optimisation, temperature compensation, IP65, -4 to 122 degrees F and a 5 year warranty.
Watch out: The US model is 4.3 A, not the 5 A sold in other regions, so big deep cycle banks take many hours.

Best for: Full-size truck batteries, large AGMs and 6 V systems
Battery Tender points its 4 A Power Tender series at 60 to 80 Ah truck batteries, large AGMs, dual batteries and 6 V systems.
Watch out: Check the exact model's lithium support before using it on LiFePO4.

Best for: Generator starting batteries and mowers in storage
Battery Tender's Junior Multi-Chemistry switches between lead-acid and LiFePO4 profiles for 3 to 30 Ah batteries.
Watch out: Too small to quickly recover a flat car battery.

- What does a smart battery charger do?
- It adjusts voltage and current through stages as the battery fills, then maintains it, instead of pushing a fixed current. Many also adjust for temperature, like CTEK's NXT 5.
- How many amps should a battery charger be?
- About 1 A for maintaining small batteries, and around 4 A or more to recover car and deep cycle batteries in a reasonable time. Check that the charger's Ah range covers your battery.
- Can a smart charger charge lithium batteries?
- Only with a lithium mode. CTEK's NXT 5 NA supports 12 V LiFePO4, and Battery Tender's Multi-Chemistry Junior has a LiFePO4 setting.
- Can I charge a battery in a cold garage?
- Chargers like the NXT 5 NA work from -4 degrees F, but lithium batteries often will not accept charge below freezing. Check the battery's own limits.
