Battery maintainers: so your generator actually starts

Quick answer

A battery maintainer is a small smart charger you leave connected to a stored battery. It charges the battery, then switches to a float mode that holds it at full without overcharging. That matters for preparedness: an electric-start generator, a riding mower or a second car can sit for months, and Battery Tender says an idle battery can lose more than 90% of its charge in a couple of months. Match the maintainer to the battery's size and chemistry. Battery Tender's 750 mA Junior suits 3 to 30 Ah lead-acid batteries, and its 1.25 A Plus suits 15 to 45 Ah car batteries.

Why stored batteries go flat

Batteries lose charge just sitting. Battery Tender's FAQ says that when a battery sits idle, its internal losses consume much of its stored charge. Depending on age and condition, it may take only a couple of months to lose more than 90% of its charge. Cold makes it worse. Battery Tender says that at 32 degrees F a battery has roughly 80% of its room-temperature capacity, and at 0 degrees F about 50%.

The generator you bought for storms may sit untouched from spring to the first ice storm. If it has electric start, a maintainer keeps its battery ready so the generator starts when you need it.

Maintainer vs trickle charger

A basic trickle charger pushes a small current all the time. A smart maintainer watches the battery and changes what it does. Battery Tender describes its stages:

Battery Tender says its chargers do not turn off after charging. They switch to a safe float voltage that keeps the battery charged without harming it. That is why a maintainer can stay connected for a whole storage season.

Pick the size that fits the battery

BatteryTypical sizeBattery Tender model it suggests
Motorcycle, ATV, lawn tractor, small generator starting batteryAbout 3 to 30 AhJunior 12V 750 mA
Passenger car, small SUV, light truck15 to 45 AhPlus 1.25 A
Full-size truck, large AGM, dual batteries, 6 volt systems60 to 80 AhPower Tender 4 A series

Too small a maintainer takes a long time to recover a flat battery. Check that the model's battery size range covers yours.

Lithium batteries need the right profile

Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries charge differently from lead-acid. Battery Tender says its standard Junior is designed for lead-acid, AGM and gel batteries. Its Junior Multi-Chemistry 1 A model adds a manual selector with two profiles, one for lead-acid and one for LiFePO4, for 3 to 30 Ah batteries. If your generator, mower or backup battery is lithium, choose a maintainer with a lithium setting and select it before connecting.

Safe connection habits

Battery Tender lists these safety features on its Junior:

It rates the Junior for use from 5 to 122 degrees F, so it works in most cold garages. Connect clamps or ring terminals as the manual describes, keep the charger dry, and route the cord where it will not be pinched by doors or mower decks.

What to look for when you buy

12V 750 mA smart maintainer (example: Battery Tender Junior)

Best for: Generator starting batteries, mowers, motorcycles and ATVs, about 3 to 30 Ah

Battery Tender lists bulk, absorption and float stages, spark-proof clamps, reverse polarity protection, a 5 to 122 degree F operating range and a 5 year limited warranty.

Watch out: Lead-acid, AGM and gel only, not lithium.

Lead-acid and lithium selectable maintainer (example: Battery Tender Junior Multi-Chemistry 1A)

Best for: Small LiFePO4 batteries and mixed garages

Battery Tender says its chemistry selector switches between a lead-acid profile and a LiFePO4 profile, for 3 to 30 Ah batteries at 12V.

Watch out: Select the chemistry before connecting.

1.25 A car battery maintainer (example: Battery Tender Plus 1.25A)

Best for: A stored car, SUV or light truck

Battery Tender recommends its Plus 1.25A for batteries in the 15 to 45 Ah range, with faster bulk recovery than the 750 mA Junior.

Watch out: Full-size truck and large AGM batteries need its larger Power Tender series.

Questions people ask

Can I leave a battery maintainer on all the time?
Smart maintainers are built for it. Battery Tender says its chargers switch to a safe float voltage after charging rather than turning off, keeping the battery full without harm.
What is the difference between a trickle charger and a battery maintainer?
Battery Tender says its microprocessor-controlled chargers manage charging stages well beyond the capability of inexpensive trickle chargers.
What size battery maintainer do I need?
Match it to the battery's amp-hours. Battery Tender suggests the 750 mA Junior for 3 to 30 Ah, the 1.25 A Plus for 15 to 45 Ah, and its Power Tender series for 60 to 80 Ah.
Can a battery maintainer charge a lithium battery?
Only one with a lithium profile. Battery Tender's standard Junior is for lead-acid, AGM and gel. Its Multi-Chemistry model adds a LiFePO4 setting.
