Quick answer

A 400 watt solar panel has a nominal power rating, not guaranteed daily energy or a battery inside. Match its open-circuit voltage, operating voltage and current to the receiving equipment. Renogy RSP400LSC lists 47.2 V open circuit; EcoFlow's original folding 400 W manual lists 48 V; EcoFlow's rigid 400 W example lists 37.10 V. Those panels are not electrically interchangeable just because their wattage matches. Choose the actual model and supported charging arrangement before deciding between folding storage and fixed mounting.

Separate panel watts from energy available after sunset

The panel produces electrical power when light reaches it. The receiving power station or a separate battery system stores energy. Renogy's instructions route battery charging through a charge controller; a bare panel is not a complete battery charger or a household AC supply.

EcoFlow's manuals define the nominal rating under standard conditions including 1,000 W per square meter irradiance and a 25°C panel temperature. The 400 W label describes that specified condition. Cloud, shade, sun angle and surface temperature change the output.

Renogy's current product FAQ gives an upper daily example of 2,000 Wh under optimal conditions. Dividing 2,000 Wh by 400 W gives five equivalent hours at rated power. That explains the scale of the claim; it does not establish your site's sunshine, energy stored after charging losses or an uninterrupted supply.

For home preparation, assess actual energy needs, generation and charging limits. Nominal panel watts alone cannot establish whole-house coverage or refrigerator duration.

Compare electrical figures before comparing folded size

Maker exampleOpen-circuit voltageOperating voltage and currentPublished panel mass
Renogy RSP400LSC suitcase47.2 V40 V; 10 A30.2 lb on current product page
EcoFlow original 400 W folding panel48 V41 V; 9.8 A35.3 lb panel only in manual
EcoFlow 400 W rigid panel37.10 V nominal31.00 V; 12.90 A48.1 lb

Renogy's operating values multiply to 400 W. EcoFlow rigid's rounded values multiply to 399.9 W, and the folding example's multiply to 401.8 W. These small differences are consistent with published rounded values and ratings; they do not measure comparative field output.

Open-circuit voltage is different from the voltage while producing power. Do not use the smaller operating-voltage number as proof that a panel will remain below an input's absolute limit. The receiver needs its own supported voltage range, current limit, connection and polarity.

The EcoFlow folding manual identifies the original protective-case and kickstand arrangement. Its panel-only mass excludes the carrying setup. Confirm the exact generation in the offer; do not mix these figures with a separately named lightweight or bifacial panel.

Check the input range and any proposed array

Renogy's English manual says the operating voltage must exceed the power station's minimum DC input voltage and open-circuit voltage must not exceed its maximum. Its German translation reverses the minimum-voltage wording; ask Renogy for clarification if using that version. Confirm compatibility from the exact receiver manual.

EcoFlow's rigid manual lists a negative open-circuit voltage temperature coefficient of 0.35% per °C. With that negative coefficient, falling cell temperature raises voltage. Its specification also gives a 3% open-circuit-voltage tolerance. Include temperature and tolerance in the qualified system assessment instead of checking only the nominal figure.

Series connections increase voltage; parallel connections increase current. As an arithmetic example, three nominal 37.10 V rigid panels in series total 111.3 V open circuit before temperature and tolerance adjustments. Two panels in parallel retain the nominal voltage but total 25.8 A operating current from two times 12.90 A. The parallel short-circuit current is 27.58 A, from two times 13.79 A. Operating current alone does not settle protection or wiring. These calculations are not an approved array.

EcoFlow's folding manual warns that a receiving station's current limit can restrict parallel-panel input. Extra nominal watts may not become extra charging power. Confirm the supported array, conductors, connectors and protection before adding panels or mixing specifications.

A panel's system-voltage rating does not establish the receiver's input limit. A connector adapter does not change voltage or current; obtain a documented match.

Plan the footprint and disclose dimensional conflicts

Renogy's current RSP400LSC page lists an unfolded size of 111.8 by 33.7 by 0.8 in and a folded size of 27.9 by 33.7 by 3.2 in. Its linked manual instead lists folded thickness as 0.8 in. Confirm actual folded dimensions before a tight storage purchase; the disagreement is not resolved here.

The current Renogy page gives an operating upper temperature of 85°C, while the linked English manual gives 80°C. These are panel limits, not permission to charge a connected battery at that temperature. Obtain current model-specific confirmation and follow the receiver's separate limits.

The original EcoFlow folding manual lists 41.7 by 93.1 by 1.0 in unfolded and 41.7 by 24.4 by 1.0 in folded. Plan room to deploy the panel and use the documented case support, not just room for the folded package.

EcoFlow's rigid panel measures 67.8 by 44.6 by 1.38 in. Its manual calls for installation by a qualified solar company and supported mounting components.

Keep the live electrical and weather limits in view

EcoFlow's rigid manual says not to plug or unplug system connectors under load. It requires clean, dry connections and the appropriate system protection. Have the installer arrange safe isolation and follow the matching equipment sequence rather than disconnecting an energized array by habit.

Inspect for broken glass, a damaged back panel or damaged connections before use. The rigid manual says to stop using a damaged module, avoid stepping on panels and keep children away from electrical components. Its mounting and commissioning instructions belong with qualified personnel.

Renogy advertises IP67 protection, but its manual still says not to immerse the unit. EcoFlow's folding page lists IP68, while its manual limits waterproofing to the main body and prohibits immersing the junction box or connection points. A protection label is not permission to put connected equipment into water.

Renogy's manual prohibits combustible support surfaces, exposure to flame and unauthorized disassembly or modification. Keep the battery or power station within its own environmental limits rather than applying the panel's weather rating to the whole system.

Check what the panel offer actually includes

Confirm whether the Amazon offer is a single panel, a multi-panel package or a kit with a controller. Renogy's current page distinguishes panel-only options from a controller bundle; the charging cable is separate in its manual.

EcoFlow's portable product page says a solar-to-XT60 charging cable is included. Its rigid page describes a different package and does not establish the same portable charging-cable inclusion. Verify the exact cable, connector and mounting contents rather than borrowing a photograph from another bundle.

Confirm the complete supported arrangement, actual package and seller offer before ordering.

What to look for when you buy

Suitcase example: Renogy RSP400LSC

Best for: A confirmed receiver or controller match with adequate deployment space

Renogy lists 400 W, 47.2 V open circuit, 40 V operating voltage and 10 A operating current in a folding suitcase.

Watch out: Resolve page-versus-manual folded thickness and upper temperature discrepancies. Confirm the charging cable and controller contents; the panel is not a complete charger by itself.

Original folding example: EcoFlow 400 W with kickstand case

Best for: The original documented folding arrangement with a compatible solar input

The manual lists 48 V open circuit, 41 V and 9.8 A operating values, and a protective case used as support.

Watch out: The 35.3 lb figure is panel only. Match the original generation, protect junctions from immersion and do not transfer these specifications to another 400 W version.

Fixed-mount example: EcoFlow 400 W rigid panel

Best for: A professionally designed mounting and charging system

EcoFlow lists 37.10 V nominal open circuit, 31 V and 12.90 A operating values, and 48.1 lb panel mass.

Watch out: Its manual requires qualified installation, safe electrical isolation and supported mounting. Array voltage needs cold-temperature and tolerance checks; kit contents differ from the portable panel.

Questions people ask

How much energy can a 400 watt solar panel produce?
It depends on the light and system. Renogy's upper 2,000 Wh daily example corresponds to five equivalent hours at the 400 W rating. That is not a site forecast or guaranteed stored energy; account for actual conditions and the receiver's limits.
How many 400 watt panels do I need for a house?
Start with the actual energy and load plan, usable local generation and supported charging system. Panel count alone does not establish whole-house capacity, battery duration or an approved grid connection. Have a qualified installer assess a fixed household system.
Can I connect the panel directly to a battery?
Use a compatible charge controller and the battery's required charging settings. Renogy's manual documents controller-mediated battery charging. Do not interpret its nominal wattage or connector as approval for direct battery charging.
Are all 400 W panels compatible with the same power station?
No. These examples have different open-circuit voltages and operating currents. Check the exact panel generation, receiver voltage range, current limit, supported connections and array conditions. Matching wattage or plug shape is insufficient.
