Choose shooting earmuffs that fit with your other protection

By the Plain Prepper editors. Updated 2026-10-17.

We research products from makers' specs, manuals and safety agencies; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.

Quick answer

Compare Howard Leight Impact Sport R-01526 for folding cups and directional microphones, or Peltor Sport Tactical 100 TAC100-OTH for its adjustable gunshot suppression timing and battery warning. Both have a published NRR of 22. That rating does not establish your personal protection. NIOSH recommends earplugs plus earmuffs for shooting; choose and fit the complete combination, rather than buying electronic muffs as a substitute for plugs.

Compare the picks and what to watch out for

Choose the complete protection setup first

These electronic earmuffs let you compare sound restoration features while keeping hearing protection as the first requirement. Neither is selected because it makes gunfire safe on its own. We compared maker specifications and exact model listings, without measuring attenuation, sound clarity or comfort.

The published NRR is 22 for the selected Impact Sport and 22 dB for Tactical 100. NIOSH explains that a package NRR often does not reflect the protection received by an individual. Do not subtract it from a gunshot figure to produce a personal exposure promise.

NIOSH’s guidance on firearms recommends double protection: earplugs and earmuffs whenever a weapon is fired. Its current workplace guidance also calls for double protection for impulse sounds. Plan the plugs, muff fit and instruction together, including for people nearby who remain exposed to the noise.

Understand what electronic sound does

The selected models use microphones and electronics to make lower level sounds audible while managing louder sound through their respective designs. That is a feature to compare for communication, not permission to remove protection to hear someone.

Honeywell describes directional microphones, an amplification cutoff at 82 dB and passive hearing protection. That cutoff is an electronics specification. It does not mean sound reaching your ear is always below that level or that every firearm exposure is adequately controlled.

3M lists variable suppression time, recessed microphones, background noise filtering and a low battery indicator for Tactical 100. Its legal note explicitly says it is not a noise cancelling hearing protector. Do not transfer ordinary music headphone claims to these products or assume noise cancellation and hearing protection mean the same thing.

Fit the muff with the actual glasses you wear

NIOSH emphasizes comfort, compatibility and consistent wear. Eye protection, glasses, head coverings and other equipment can interfere with an earmuff seal. Assess the complete arrangement you intend to use rather than the muff by itself in a product photo.

Honeywell’s fitting instructions call for the cups to cover the ears completely and the cushions to seal firmly against the head, without obstructing hair. If another item prevents that fit, choose a compatible combination and obtain fitting help. Do not loosen the headband simply to make an obstructed cup feel more comfortable.

There is no universal comfort winner here. A cup shape that suits another person may not suit your head or glasses. Before choosing, check the adjustment range, cushion replacement options and return conditions for trying the fit without exposing yourself to hazardous sound.

Battery features are convenience features

The Impact Sport sheet describes a folding headband, included AAA batteries. Its compact folded form is useful when you want the hearing equipment to fit into a range bag.

3M lists two AAA batteries, not included, and a two hour automatic shutoff for Tactical 100. Its low battery indicator gives another convenience feature to compare. Neither shutoff interval measures the time it is safe to remain in noise.

Check the actual instructions for power loss, battery replacement and operation before the trip. Carry the batteries the exact model requires. If sound restoration fails, stop and resolve the problem in a safe place with range staff rather than removing the muff in an exposed area to troubleshoot it.

Use fit assessment instead of a bigger number

NIOSH identifies individual hearing protector fit assessment as the way to check the protection a worker actually obtains. It can produce a personal attenuation rating, which is different from the label NRR. Ask a qualified hearing conservation provider about the complete plug and muff combination when exposure requires it.

Do not add the plug and muff package ratings together. No combined attenuation figure is established for either product in this guide. Fit, consistent wear and the exposure itself remain relevant even when both items carry a rating.

A higher NRR model may be another option to assess, but it is not automatically suitable if it conflicts with glasses or fits poorly. Conversely, communication features do not justify accepting an inadequate fit. Follow the range’s protective equipment requirements and obtain help if you cannot maintain a seal.

Inspect the cushions and match the exact model

Honeywell directs users to inspect cups and cushions for damage, replace damaged cushions and follow the specified care routine. Worn or damaged cushions are a maintenance issue, not simply a cosmetic issue. Obtain replacement parts approved for the exact protector.

The checked green Impact Sport listing identifies R-01526, matching the maker’s model. Tactical 100’s TAC100-OTH catalog number also matches 3M’s page and the selected listing. Other colors, newer Bluetooth models and replacement cushions should not inherit these specifications without their own checks.

Questions people ask

Do I need plugs under shooting earmuffs?
NIOSH recommends double protection for shooting. Use properly fitted plugs and muffs together, follow the range requirements and obtain individual fitting guidance.
Can I add the plug and muff NRR figures?
This guide establishes no combined rating. Label NRR does not establish an individual’s attenuation, and adding the numbers is not a verified protection calculation.
Are electronic earmuffs ordinary noise cancelling headphones?
No. 3M explicitly states Tactical 100 is not a noise cancelling hearing protector. Compare documented protection and fit separately from electronic listening features.
Can glasses affect the seal?
Yes. NIOSH identifies eyeglasses and other head worn equipment as possible compatibility problems. Check the seal with the actual eye protection you use.
Which model includes batteries?
The opened Honeywell sheet lists included AAA batteries for Impact Sport. 3M lists two AAA batteries, not included, for Tactical 100. Confirm the exact package.
