Choose a handgun lock box by fit, access and backup
We research products from makers' specs, manuals and safety agencies; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
Quick answer
For a battery free keyed box, compare the Hornady Lock Box XL 95210. For a portable case with a keypad, compare the Vaultek LifePod 20; its biometric version adds fingerprint entry. These are compact lock boxes, not a comparison of full size anchored safes. Start with interior fit and how you will secure the box, then choose an entry method you can maintain. Both makers say not to store loaded firearms in these units.

Three choices and the reason to choose each
We compared published maker specifications and instructions, not resistance to attack or opening speed. The choice here is between a steel keyed box and two versions of a polymer portable case. A fingerprint reader changes how you open the case; it does not establish a higher burglary or fire rating.
| Pick | Entry | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Hornady XL 95210 | Key | Key access only |
| LifePod 20 | PIN and backup key | Battery needed to lock |
| LifePod 20 Biometric | Print, PIN and key | Keep another entry route |
The Hornady is the straightforward choice if you want to avoid battery upkeep and can keep its key secure. Choose the standard LifePod if you want keypad entry without a fingerprint reader. Choose the biometric version only if that extra entry option is useful to you.
Will your handgun fit with the lid shut?
Compare the whole stored item with usable interior space, rather than the box exterior. Hornady lists the XL interior as 9.75 by 6.75 by 1.75 inches, versus an exterior of 10 by 7 by 2 inches. Vaultek describes LifePod 20 fit for handguns up to 9.25 inches long and says to remove its interior tray for full size pistols.
Do not treat a length limit as confirmation that every accessory combination fits. Ask the maker about the exact configuration if clearance is uncertain. The LifePod listing contains conflicting interior measurements in different blocks, so use the maker fit guidance and its fit guide before ordering; we do not resolve that conflict by selecting the largest number.
Plan the space around the box too. Check whether its lid can open where you want to keep it and whether the supplied cable can reach a suitable fixed object. A box that fits a drawer with its lid closed may still be awkward to open there. This is a placement check, not a claim that a drawer adds security.
What happens when the battery dies?
The Hornady XL uses a key, so battery replacement is not part of its operation. That leaves a different responsibility: keep the key available to authorized adults and inaccessible to children. A spare key stored inside the locked box cannot help you open it.
Vaultek specifies a 9V alkaline battery for normal LifePod keypad operation. Its backup keys unlock the case but cannot lock it. Its micro USB port can supply emergency power. This matters before a trip or a power problem: do not assume that a case with mechanical backup access can also be relocked with that key.
Vaultek also describes an optional anti picking setting that disables the front keyway. If you enable it, the manual keys will not open the case. Read that tradeoff before choosing the setting. The biometric model still has keypad access; Vaultek publishes troubleshooting advice for fingerprints that do not register well. We make no claim that a fingerprint reader will recognize every user every time.
A portable box still needs a storage plan
Both makers provide a steel security cable. Hornady describes attaching its cable to a stationary object; Vaultek describes the same purpose for its included cable. Decide where the box will be secured before buying, rather than leaving that question until the case arrives. No portable case is impenetrable, a limit Vaultek states in its instructions.
ATF advises unloading firearms before storage, keeping ammunition locked separately, and keeping keys and combinations out of children's reach. Follow the firearm maker's handling instructions as well as the storage box manual. These picks do not replace responsible handling or control of who can reach the keys, code or stored firearm.
For temporary vehicle storage, ATF recommends a secure device kept out of sight and securing the lock box to the vehicle where possible. It says to remove the firearm when you return home. A locked car door or glove compartment is not the same storage arrangement. We do not present any of these boxes as permission to carry or store a firearm in a particular place.
Water resistance, fire claims and long storage
Vaultek describes LifePod 20 as water resistant, airtight and dustproof. Its instructions require attention to the gasket, side latches and front cover for the weather seal. Those features concern environmental sealing; they do not establish a fire endurance rating. This comparison does not claim that either maker's selected box protects contents in a house fire.
Do not add a heat producing accessory to a small case simply because a larger gun safe uses one. Our gun safe dehumidifier guide separates moisture absorbers from powered rods and their space and power requirements. Choose accessories only within both makers' instructions.
If the box will be used in a car, keep the vehicle preparedness supplies separate from the firearm storage decision. Our car first aid kit guide covers supplies rather than secure firearm storage. An everyday flashlight may help with ordinary low light tasks, but it adds no security rating to a case.
Check the exact version before ordering
The Hornady choice is model 95210, not the smaller Large box or the Alpha Elite. For Vaultek, the black keypad version is VLP20-BK and the black biometric version is BLP20-BK. The maker store barcodes match the Amazon UPCs for the listings checked. LifePod 20 is also described as LifePod 2.0 in the maker's instructions.
On October 17, 2026 the checked new Vaultek offers were sold by Vaultek Safe Inc. The mechanical Hornady 95210 offer was sold by Firefly Buys, a third party. Seller and availability can change. Match the model and entry method again on Amazon; the buttons below are exact product searches, so inspect the result before ordering.

- Is a handgun lock box the same as a full size safe?
- No. This guide compares portable lock boxes. It does not establish burglary or fire resistance for a full size anchored safe. Choose the storage category around your security need before comparing entry features.
- Can I store a loaded handgun in these picks?
- No. Both selected makers say not to store loaded firearms in their units. ATF advises unloading before storage and keeping ammunition locked separately. Do not let a quick access feature override the product instructions.
- Does a LifePod key work when its battery is dead?
- The key can unlock it when key access is enabled, but cannot lock it. The optional anti picking setting disables the keyway. Its emergency power port provides another route described by Vaultek.
- Will a handgun fit with the LifePod tray installed?
- Do not assume so. Vaultek says to remove the tray for full size pistols. Check the maker fit guidance and your exact configuration; the Amazon listing has inconsistent interior measurements.
- Does a TSA claim mean I can take it anywhere?
- No. Hornady says to check current TSA regulations and airline policies before travel and follow local storage laws. This guide does not verify a particular itinerary or give legal permission.
