Choose a rifle case by usable fit and secure closure
We research products from makers' specs, manuals and safety agencies; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
Quick answer
Choose the Pelican V800 for its larger documented interior and a foam layout you cut to fit. Choose the Plano All Weather 42 PLA11842 when its shorter interior suits the equipment and you want preperforated foam. Measure the unloaded firearm with its fitted optics before choosing. A case name or nominal length is not a usable fit guarantee, and a transport case does not replace secure home storage.

Two hard cases with different interior lengths
We compared opened maker specifications and the exact Amazon listings. These are storage and transport accessories, not firearm recommendations. The meaningful first choice is usable interior size. A large outer shell may still be unsuitable once padding, an optic or another item is included.
Pelican specifies a 53 by 16 by 6 inch interior for the V800. Plano specifies a 43 by 14 by 5 inch interior for the PLA11842. The Plano model is marketed as a 42 inch case even though the interior specification says 43 inches. Plan from the actual drawing and your equipment measurements, not the number in a product name.
| Case | Interior, in. | Foam |
|---|---|---|
| V800 | 53 × 16 × 6 | Cut to fit |
| PLA11842 | 43 × 14 × 5 | Pluck to fit |
Keep padding in the fit plan
Write down the complete unloaded equipment length, width and height in its transport configuration, including any optic that remains attached. Then compare those measurements with the usable padded area. A bare shell dimension is a boundary, not an instruction to cut foam right to the edge.
Both products offer foam that can be customized, but in different forms. Pelican supplies foam intended to be cut for the contents. Plano describes preperforated pluck to fit foam. Neither description promises that an existing cutout will suit a different item or that every advertised multiple firearm layout will fit your configuration.
If you need to carry more than one item, sketch the complete arrangement before choosing a case. Leave the foam support required by the maker and avoid planning equipment to rest against neighboring items. Obtain replacement foam information before making an irreversible cut. This comparison does not establish how much impact a particular cutout arrangement can withstand.
Check the outside size and the carrying job
Pelican lists the exterior as 56.11 by 19.15 by 6.65 inches and weight with foam as 24.95 pounds. The shell is larger than the interior. Check the vehicle loading opening and where the case will lie, not just the equipment you want to place inside it.
Plano’s exterior specification is 44.4 by 16.8 by 6.4 inches. Its selected case has wheels and lockable dual stage latches. Consider the actual route from storage to vehicle and whether the handle, wheel orientation and available space work for that route. A wheeled case still needs to be lifted at steps and vehicle openings.
Do not select the larger case simply because it carries more in a marketing picture. An oversized box can consume the loading space needed for other luggage. Choose the smaller documented interior only when the full padded layout fits; otherwise move up in case size rather than reducing necessary support.
Separate weather resistance from a storage plan
Pelican describes the Vault model as weather resistant and dustproof. This guide does not turn that wording into a submersion rating. Plano describes its continuous Dri Loc seal as watertight and dustproof, and lists a pressure release valve. These are maker claims, not a comparative leak or impact assessment.
A seal does not tell you that equipment packed damp is ready for long term storage. Inspect the maker care instructions and firearm instructions before storing, and resolve moisture management separately. Our gun safe dehumidifier guide compares moisture control products; it does not make a transport case a home safe.
ATF recommends unloading before storage, keeping ammunition locked separately and controlling access to keys and combinations. Treat that as a separate storage requirement from foam fit, handles and weather seals. Follow applicable laws and the equipment instructions rather than assuming a case feature settles storage suitability.
Airline wording does not settle airline acceptance
Plano uses airline approved wording. TSA’s actual requirement is an unloaded firearm in a locked hard sided container as checked baggage only, declared to the airline. The container must prevent access; a locked case that can be easily opened is not permitted. A shopping listing cannot certify your packed configuration.
Check the airline’s current conditions and the laws for the route and destination before travel. This guide does not establish that either packed case meets every carrier or jurisdiction requirement. Confirm suitable locks, closure and the complete current official instructions for your specific trip.
Do not confuse an accessory lock shown beside a case with a lock supplied in the selected package. Check the package contents and the padlock fit before ordering. Pelican lists a 0.46 inch padlock hole diameter for the V800; that dimension alone does not establish the security or legal adequacy of a particular lock.
Match the exact model and selected seller
The Pelican maker SKU is VCV800-0000-BLK and the checked Amazon model field matches it on B00745TVNQ. The New offer was sold by Amazon on October 17, 2026. Select the black V800 with foam rather than assuming every V800 offer includes the same interior.
The Plano maker page prints PLA11842, matching the direct Amazon model field on B07B7SB486, UPC 024099118422. Its direct page showed an in stock cart offer from Nimrod’s Wares. The API separately returned a New Amazon offer with no availability text, so those are different seller routes. Recheck the current New condition, seller and delivery terms rather than treating the API row as the direct cart seller.
No forced entry resistance, fire rating, impact performance or comparative water resistance was measured for this guide. If a rated home enclosure is the actual requirement, these transport features do not answer that purchase. A compact lock box is another category with its own size and security limits, not a substitute long gun case.

- Should I buy by the length in the case name?
- Use the actual interior dimensions and padding layout. The Plano 42 name accompanies a 43 inch maker interior specification. Neither number alone confirms that your complete equipment fits.
- Does a hard case replace a gun cabinet?
- No home storage or burglary rating was established here. ATF recommends unloaded secure storage, ammunition locked separately and controlled keys and combinations. Evaluate a home enclosure separately.
- Does airline approved mean any flight will accept it?
- No. TSA requires a properly secured locked hard sided case for an unloaded firearm in checked baggage, with airline declaration. The airline and route may add conditions. Check the current official requirements.
- Which case has pluck foam?
- Plano describes preperforated pluck to fit foam for PLA11842. Pelican’s selected V800 has foam intended to be cut to the contents. Compare the actual supplied inserts before preparing a layout.
- Is the Pelican Vault waterproof?
- The opened V800 page describes weather resistance. We have not established a submersion rating for it. Do not turn a weather resistance description into a waterproof guarantee.
