Maglite flashlights: long runtimes from batteries you can buy anywhere

Quick answer
Maglite's current LED lights still run on ordinary cells. The ML300L 3D uses three D batteries and lists up to 298 hours on its 23 lumen Eco mode, more than 12 days, or 746 lumens on High for 32 hours. The 4D version reaches 1,002 lumens and 434 hours on Eco. The Mini Maglite Pro runs on two AA cells at up to 332 lumens. For a rechargeable, Maglite's ML150LR uses a LiFePO4 pack that charges to 80% in 30 minutes.
Three Maglite flashlights compared
| Spec | Mini Maglite Pro (2 AA) | ML300L 3D | ML300L 4D |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max output | 332 lm | 746 lm | 1,002 lm |
| Beam / candela | 172 m / 7,399 cd | 403 m / 40,596 cd | 511 m / 65,407 cd |
| Runtime, high | About 2.5 h | 32 h | 5 h 45 min |
| Longest runtime | About 13 h at 28 lm | 298 h at 23 lm (Eco) | 434 h (Eco) |
| Batteries | 2 x AA, included | 3 x D alkaline | 4 x D alkaline |
| Length / weight with batteries | 6.6 in / 4.15 oz | 11.75 in / 26.4 oz | 14.0 in / 32 oz |
| Water / drop | IPX4 / 1 m | IPX4 / 1 m | Water resistant / 1 m |
Maglite publishes these as ANSI figures. They pass the ANSI FL1 cross-check of beam distance against candela: 2 times the square root of 40,596 is about 403 m.
Why D-cell lights still make sense for outages
- Runtime: 298 hours on Eco for the 3D is about 12.4 days of continuous light, and 434 hours for the 4D is about 18 days.
- No charging: the ML300L runs on standard D alkaline cells, so there is nothing to recharge during an outage.
- Modes: Maglite's QuickClik switching on the ML300L gives three output levels and four selectable function sets.
- Focus: Quick Focus moves from spot to flood in under a quarter turn of the head, per Maglite.
The trade-off is size and weight: the 4D is 2 pounds with batteries, against 4.15 oz for the Mini Pro.
The Mini Maglite Pro for pockets and kits
- Twist-head control: Maglite keeps the classic twist-head switch, which also adjusts the beam from spot to flood.
- Two outputs: 332 lumens for about 2.5 hours, or 28 lumens for about 13 hours.
- Candle Mode: Maglite lists a Candle Mode capability for area light.
- AA power: it shares batteries with radios and other gear, and two AA cells come in the box.
The Pro keeps the classic Mini Maglite shape with an LED light engine.
The rechargeable option: ML150LR
Maglite's ML150LR uses a rechargeable LiFePO4 pack. Maglite lists a fast recharge to 80% in 30 minutes and a full charge in 2.5 hours, 1,082 lumens on High for 3 hours 15 minutes, 18 hours on Low and up to 79 hours on Eco, with a 458 m beam. Its QuickClik modes add a 12 Hz strobe and momentary on. It is sold in several charging systems for home and vehicle, so confirm which charger comes with the listing you buy.
For outage planning, a mix works: a D-cell ML300L for long nights and a rechargeable for daily use while power is on.
Care and battery tips
- Remove alkaline cells from a light you store for months, so a leaking cell cannot damage it.
- Rotate spares by date and keep them with the light they fit.
- Check the beam before storm season by switching through each mode.
- Water: IPX4 means splash resistance; Maglite describes protection against splashing water, so keep the lights out of submersion.
