Quick answer

For a useful efficiency comparison, ask for overall efficiency on the same heating-value basis, preferably a clearly labeled HHV figure. Do not compare an optimum result, a combustion-only percentage and an average overall rating as if they mean the same thing. Blaze King lists Princess PE32 at 82% HHV; Jotul lists F 35 Rockwood at 68.5% HHV and 73.67% LHV. The right stove must also fit your heat requirement, chimney and permitted installation. Dry fuel and correct operation remain necessary after purchase.

Overall efficiency measures the heat reaching the space

EPA's archived Burn Wise explanation distinguishes combustion efficiency from overall efficiency. Combustion efficiency describes how effectively fuel becomes usable heat. Overall efficiency addresses how much heat is transferred to the space being heated. A high combustion-only claim does not tell you that the same proportion reaches the room.

Ask the manufacturer for the exact metric behind an unlabeled percentage. Is it overall efficiency or combustion efficiency? Is it an average result or an optimum result at a particular burn rate? Which fuel heating-value basis and test method were used? Retain those labels beside the number when comparing models.

The EPA page is now a historic program record and says updates stopped in October 2025. Its efficiency explanation is useful background, not a substitute for current model documentation or the local authority's installation requirements. For buying, use the matching maker specification and operating manual.

Efficiency also differs from particulate emissions. A grams-per-hour result describes emitted particles under the stated test, not the proportion of fuel energy delivered indoors. Read both fields, but do not use a lower emissions number as a numerical efficiency rating.

Keep HHV, LHV and optimum ratings separate

HHV means higher heating value; LHV means lower heating value. Jotul's F 35 manual explains that the two calculations account differently for energy associated with water vapor in the exhaust. The same stove can therefore show a higher LHV percentage without having gained a different physical heat exchanger.

Drolet Escape 1800, DB0310272% average overall77% LHV; 79% optimumMaker marks this model discontinued

For the legacy Drolet, 79 minus 72 equals 7 percentage points. That gap is between its optimum and average-overall figures, not an improvement produced by choosing a different accessory. Likewise, Jotul's 73.67 minus 68.5 equals 5.17 percentage points between two accounting bases for the same stove. Its manual's operation section gives the more precise HHV value as 68.47%, which rounds to the 68.5% specification.

A common HHV label is a necessary starting point, not proof that every model was tested with identical fuel and operating conditions. Blaze King's PE32 report uses a cribwood certification protocol, while the cited Jotul documentation identifies cordwood emissions testing. Keep the protocol with the result; do not turn this table into a guaranteed firewood-saving ranking.

Read model status and useful output before choosing size

The Princess PE32 product page lists a 2.91 cu ft firebox and a thermostat controlling heat output without electricity. Its certification report lists 3.09 cu ft total and 2.86 cu ft usable firebox volume, rather than the product page's 2.91 cu ft. These published volumes differ; confirm the applicable dimension and loading definition before using one for planning. Its headline of up to 32 hours explicitly refers to operation on low. That is not a promise of maximum heat for the entire period. Choose it only after the installer checks heat demand and the exact approved installation.

Jotul's F 35 manual gives a tested heat-output range of 13,533-59,443 BTU/hr and a heating-area claim of up to 1,200 sq ft. It expressly qualifies heating capacity by home design, climate, wood and operation. A smaller nominal heating-area claim can be relevant to a smaller space, but it does not replace a heat-loss assessment.

The current Jotul web page labels its maximum-output field in kW while displaying 59.443. The manual instead gives 59,443 BTU/hr. These units do not describe the same output; do not use that web field as a confirmed 59.443 kW rating. Have the maker clarify any specification used for installation design.

Drolet currently marks Escape 1800 DB03102 discontinued. Its detailed efficiency fields remain a useful example for an existing owner reading older literature. No verified successor is identified here. Do not assume an old listing is a current model or that another stove with a similar name has identical clearances, parts or test figures.

The wood stove guide covers the broader heating and installation decision. Efficiency narrows the shortlist after the appliance can safely suit the space.

Dry wood and operating habits can outweigh the label

EPA's archived guidance says properly dried wood should read 20% moisture or less. A moisture meter helps evaluate fuel instead of relying only on appearance or how long it has been stored. Follow the meter's wood-use instructions and the stove manual's fuel requirements; one surface reading does not establish every log's condition.

Jotul's operating manual explains that energy spent evaporating excess fuel moisture reduces the heat reaching the living space. It also warns that poor kindling and smoldering operation can reduce performance. Buying a stove with a favorable laboratory percentage does not compensate for unsuitable fuel or incorrect air-control use.

The same manual recommends a stove-top thermometer and provides model-specific placement and operating guidance. Use that guidance rather than transferring another stove's temperature band to yours. A thermometer helps monitor operation; it does not directly measure overall efficiency.

Check the matching instructions for fire establishment, air adjustment, loading and maintenance. Do not modify the manufacturer-set air controls to try to extend a burn. The manual prohibits changing the minimum burn setting, and restricting a fire beyond the approved operation is not an efficiency upgrade.

An efficient appliance still needs a complete safe installation

Choose the installer and venting plan before ordering the stove. Jotul's manual directs owners to check local building requirements and gives separate hearth, chimney and clearance arrangements. A decorative hearth, a small floor protector or an existing masonry opening is not automatically an approved installation.

Use the exact manual for wall, corner, alcove or mobile-home configurations, as applicable. Do not borrow a clearance from a different model or from a generic accessory listing. The chimney, connector and floor protection must be suitable for the approved arrangement.

US Fire Administration advises keeping things that burn at least 3 feet from a fireplace or stove. That household separation advice does not replace the appliance's tested installation clearances. It also advises professional chimney inspection and cleaning each year and placing ashes in a covered metal container outdoors at least 10 feet from the home.

Maintain smoke and CO alarms as directed by the applicable instructions, keep people clear of hot surfaces and follow the manual's permitted fuels. Never use a tent stove or improvised flue as a shortcut to installing a residential heater. Indoor installation and operation have to be supported by the actual appliance documentation.

Use Amazon searches for exact-match equipment and accessories

For a stove, confirm the full model identification, documented efficiency basis and applicable installation manual. Check regional approval and the installer's requirements before accepting a marketplace offer. An EPA label or a favorable percentage alone cannot establish a fit for your chimney or room.

The first search below is a documented model example, not a verified current Amazon stock claim. If no exact supported offer appears, do not substitute a loosely similar stove based on the efficiency number. The moisture meter and stove-top thermometer are separate accessories that support the operating process.

These checks produce a more useful shortlist than sorting every unlabeled percentage from highest to lowest. They also keep claims from retired models from silently becoming specifications for a new appliance.

What to look for when you buy

Documented HHV example: Blaze King Princess PE32

Best for: A professionally assessed installation needing its supported heat range

Blaze King lists 82% HHV in its model efficiency table, a 2.91 cu ft firebox and a thermostat that operates without electricity.

Watch out: The up-to-32-hour claim is low operation, not constant maximum heat. Confirm the exact appliance, installation and any actual Amazon offer before ordering.

Fuel-check accessory: wood moisture meter

Best for: Checking firewood against the stove's dry-fuel requirements

EPA explains that wet fuel wastes heat and recommends a moisture reading of 20% or less for properly dried wood.

Watch out: Follow the meter's wood instructions and sample the fuel appropriately. A meter cannot correct wet wood or prove stove efficiency.

Operating accessory: stove-top thermometer

Best for: A stove whose manual specifies thermometer placement and use

Jotul's F 35 manual recommends monitoring with a stove-top thermometer and gives a specific placement and operating approach.

Watch out: Use the temperature guidance for your exact stove. A stove-top instrument is not automatically suitable for a flue or a different model.

Questions people ask

What makes a wood stove high efficiency?
A documented overall efficiency tells you more about useful room heat than an unlabeled or combustion-only claim. Compare the same HHV basis and retain the test conditions, then confirm the stove fits the heat demand and installation.
Why does the same stove have two efficiency percentages?
HHV and LHV use different fuel-energy accounting. Jotul lists F 35 at 68.5% HHV and 73.67% LHV. These are different calculation bases for the same appliance, not two selectable operating modes.
Does a long burn time mean high heat all night?
No. Blaze King's Princess PE32 claim of up to 32 hours is explicitly on low. Evaluate its useful heat range and your space's needs separately from that endurance claim.
Can I improve efficiency by shutting the air down further?
Use only the manual's approved controls and operating method. Jotul prohibits altering the minimum burn setting. Dry fuel, a suitable chimney, correct fire establishment and maintained equipment are the supported starting points.
