Quick answer

A compact stove is not automatically allowed inside a fireplace. First identify the fireplace construction and the exact appliance's permitted arrangement. Jotul F 35 documentation describes a masonry hearth connection but requires the stove in front of the opening; its short-leg opening-height statements also differ. The North American Morso 1410B manual prohibits installation in any fireplace. Have a qualified installer confirm placement, venting, hearth and mantel clearances before treating body dimensions as a fit recommendation.

Decide whether you need a hearth stove or an insert

Start with what small means in your room: a narrow appliance, a low opening, a shallow hearth or a modest heating requirement. These are separate constraints. A stove can satisfy the first and fail the rest. Write down the intended placement and let the installer check it against the exact manual.

A freestanding stove using an existing fireplace chimney is a different arrangement from an insert specifically intended for a fireplace opening. If the appliance instructions require the body in front of the opening, do not move it into the recess to gain floor space. For an insert, choose equipment whose listing and instructions support your actual fireplace construction.

EPA's archived choosing guidance recommends considering the space to be heated and bringing a floor plan when discussing a stove or fireplace insert. That program page is now a historic record; current appliance documentation and your local installation authority must settle approval.

Determine whether the existing fireplace is masonry or factory built. Jotul's F 35 manual explicitly excludes installation in a factory-built fireplace. A metal firebox, decorative surround or chimney that looks substantial is not proof of an approved masonry hearth arrangement.

Record body dimensions without calling them clearance

Maker product figureJotul F 35 RockwoodMorso 1410B, North American page
Body height28.75 in27 3/4 in
Body width20.25 in15 3/8 in
Body depth30.25 in14 1/2 in
Published heating-area claimUp to 1,200 sq ftMaximum 1,000 sq ft

These are product-page dimensions, not the space required for a safe installation. Add the actual flue connection, floor protection, combustible clearances and access for loading and maintenance from the matching documentation. The narrower Morso body cannot by itself establish permission to use a fireplace recess.

Measure the opening at the front and toward the rear, the lintel position, the hearth projection, surrounding trim and mantel. Give the installer the full sketch instead of only the opening's width. Record any combustible finish or structure behind a surface that appears to be masonry.

The area figures are maker heating claims, not guarantees for every climate or floor plan. Jotul's manual explicitly qualifies capacity by home design, climate, wood type and operation. A smaller room still needs the correct output and heat distribution, not simply the smallest appliance that fits a tape measure.

The F 35 short-leg option needs clarification before purchase

Jotul identifies Short Leg Kit 157636 for existing code-approved masonry hearth-mount arrangements. The manual states that it lowers stove height by 3 1/4 inches. Subtracting that from the listed 28 3/4-inch body height gives 25 1/2 inches, but this calculation does not establish an approved fireplace opening.

The November 2025 manual has conflicting opening statements. Its accessory description says the kit permits an opening as low as 25 1/2 inches; the hearth section says 23 1/8 inches for short legs and 27 inches for standard legs. The same hearth page instructs that the stove must be in front of the fireplace opening. Its hearth figure also depicts the stove in front.

Do not select the lower number as a guaranteed fit or reinterpret the stove as an insert. Obtain configuration-specific clarification from Jotul through the installer before ordering a kit or relying on any opening-height figure. The short-leg option is also excluded from alcove use, and the accessory description excludes mobile-home use.

A factory-built fireplace remains excluded. Changing legs, routing a pipe through the opening or adding a heat shield does not change that prohibition. Treat the fireplace, stove, connector and chimney as a single installation that must satisfy the relevant instructions.

A compact Morso is a room-stove reference, not an insert

Morso's current US/Canada 1410B page lists a 0.736 cu ft firebox and maximum heat of 24,733 BTU/hr. The linked North American manual gives a tested output range of 12,115-24,733 BTU/hr. Those figures help describe its scale, but they do not authorize a fireplace installation.

The manual expressly says not to install it in any fireplace. It also requires an approved lined masonry chimney or listed high-temperature factory-built chimney and prohibits sharing a chimney flue with another appliance. Have the installer evaluate a supported freestanding location and vent route if you are considering this model.

There is another source difference relevant to daily use: the product page lists 12-inch logs, while the manual's fuel instructions say to cut wood to a maximum of 10 inches. Confirm the applicable loading specification rather than planning every load around the longer listing figure. The maker recommends dry permitted wood, not an improvised alternative fuel.

The product page includes a generic CE-reference sentence for connector clearances. For a North American installation, use the linked North American manual and local requirements rather than treating that sentence as a complete clearance specification. The manual remains the source for the actual configuration.

Hearth, chimney and mantel checks decide the installation

Jotul's masonry hearth instructions recommend a full chimney liner for performance and describe the damper area and sealed block-off arrangement. Have the professional determine liner suitability, chimney condition and the required connection. A pipe that physically passes through the old opening is only one part of the assessment.

The manuals distinguish the chimney connector from the chimney itself. Connector pipe is not a substitute for a listed chimney system. Do not assemble unverified pieces merely because the diameters look compatible. Use the specified components and the installer's approved route.

Floor protection is another independent requirement. Jotul's manual specifies continuous noncombustible protection and different layouts for the connection and region. The existing hearth must satisfy the applicable dimensions and construction, including the area in front of the loading door. A decorative mat is not automatically a compliant floor protector.

Check mantel, side trim, walls and any recessed ceiling against the relevant diagrams. Avoid transferring a generic safety distance or a different model's clearance to your fireplace. If the complete permitted arrangement cannot fit, consider a suitable listed insert or a different approved room location with the installer.

Plan safe daily use and inspect the exact Amazon offer

US Fire Administration recommends professional chimney inspection and cleaning each year. Keep the wood-stove door closed during ordinary operation, opening only as directed for loading or tending. Its safety card calls for household combustibles to stay at least 3 feet away and for ashes to go in a lidded metal container outdoors at least 10 feet from the home. That household separation advice does not replace the stove's specific installation clearances.

USFA also recommends CO alarms on every home level and outside separate sleeping areas. Follow the alarm instructions, maintain smoke alarms and keep stove and fireplace vents clear. Alarms supplement an approved installation and maintained chimney; they do not make an unsupported fireplace placement safe.

The searches below are documented equipment examples and an ash-handling accessory. They are not proof of present Amazon stock or approval for your fireplace. Obtain the installation decision first, then choose the matching equipment.

What to look for when you buy

Masonry-hearth reference: Jotul F 35 Rockwood

Best for: An installer-confirmed arrangement with the body in front of the opening

Jotul publishes its body dimensions and specific masonry-hearth instructions, with a matching short-leg accessory for restricted configurations.

Watch out: The opening-height statements conflict. Clarify the approved arrangement before purchase; the stove is excluded from factory-built fireplaces and must not be treated as an insert.

Questions people ask

Can I put a small wood stove inside my fireplace?
Only a configuration expressly supported by the appliance and fireplace instructions. The F 35 manual requires the body in front of the opening; the North American Morso 1410B manual prohibits fireplace installation. Physical fit is insufficient.
Will short legs make a stove fit a low opening?
They change body height only in the approved application. Jotul's F 35 short-leg documentation gives differing opening heights, so obtain configuration-specific clarification before relying on either number.
Is a small stove automatically suitable for a factory-built fireplace?
No. The F 35 manual expressly excludes that installation. If considering an insert or other appliance, the installer must verify compatibility with the exact fireplace and its listing.
Do I need a new liner when using an existing chimney?
Have the chimney inspected and the connection assessed. Jotul recommends a full liner for its masonry-hearth arrangement; Morso requires an approved lined chimney or the specified listed system. The existing flue cannot be assumed suitable.
