Quick answer

A 12 V LiFePO4 battery needs a charger with a lithium setting that stays inside the battery maker's limits. Battle Born, for example, lists 14.2 to 14.6 V absorption, no temperature compensation and a 14.7 V high-voltage cutoff. Lithium modes on the Victron Blue Smart IP65 (14.2 V), NOCO GENIUS10 (14.6 V) and LiTime's dedicated chargers (14.6 V) all sit inside that window. Size the amps to your bank: Victron's math puts a 100 Ah battery at about 10 hours on 10 A. Never use a lead-acid repair mode, and do not charge below 32°F.

Start with the battery's charging spec

The battery's manual sets the rules, not the charger box. Battle Born's BB10012 manual is a clear example of what a 12 V LiFePO4 maker lists:

SettingBattle Born BB10012
Absorption voltage14.2 to 14.6 V
Float voltage13.4 to 13.8 V
Absorption time30 minutes per 100 Ah of bank
Recommended charge current0.5C (50 A for 100 Ah)
Temperature compensationNo, disabled
High-voltage BMS protection14.7 V
Charge temperature32°F to 131°F

Battle Born adds that if a charger cannot run a multi-stage profile, it must at least be set to the bulk/absorption voltage with equalization and temperature compensation turned off. Those two lead-acid features are the main way a general charger gets lithium wrong. Read your own battery's table before buying; other brands may list different numbers.

Three chargers and their lithium settings

ChargerLithium voltageCurrentOther chemistriesNotes from the maker
Victron Blue Smart IP65 12/1014.2 V absorption, no float, 13.5 V storage10 A (3 A low mode)Yes: flooded, AGM, gel presetsIP65; UL 1236 compliance; Bluetooth app; 5-year warranty
NOCO GENIUS1014.6 V10 AYes: 6 V and 12 V lead-acid, AGMIP65; up to 230 Ah; lithium mode for BMS batteries only; 3-year warranty
LiTime 12V 20A14.6 V20 ANo, LiFePO4 onlyPre-charge, constant current, constant voltage; 0 V activation; fan; CE and RoHS; 2-year warranty

All three lithium voltages fall inside Battle Born's 14.2 to 14.6 V absorption range. The Victron's Li-ion profile skips float and drops to a 13.5 V storage level, and Victron says temperature compensation does not apply in Li-ion mode. NOCO's guide warns to use its lithium mode only on 12 V lithium batteries with a built-in battery management system (BMS), and to ask the battery maker for its recommended rates and voltages first.

A multi-chemistry unit like the Victron or NOCO makes sense if you also keep a lead-acid car or generator battery. A dedicated LiFePO4 charger like the LiTime is simpler: LiTime says its 10 A IP65 version is only for LiFePO4 and points lead-acid users to its multi-bank models.

Size the amps to the bank

Victron's manual gives a simple formula for lithium: bulk time equals the amp-hours used below 95% charge divided by the charge current, plus usually less than 30 minutes of absorption. Applied to a fully discharged 100 Ah battery:

These figures exclude any loads running at the same time. NOCO's own table, for reference only, shows about 7 hours for a 100 Ah battery from 50% discharged on the GENIUS10.

Stay inside both limits. Victron rates the 12/10 for batteries up to 100 Ah and says the lithium battery should be at least 20 Ah in full-current mode, or 6 Ah in low-current mode. Battle Born recommends 0.5C and lists 50 A as the maximum charge current for its 100 Ah battery. For a 200 Ah bank, step up to the 12/25, which Victron rates for batteries up to 250 Ah.

Modes that do not belong on lithium

Many smart chargers include features built for lead-acid that can trip or stress a lithium battery:

A lithium battery whose BMS has shut off for low voltage can read near zero. Victron says its charger resets that under-voltage protection automatically and can recharge from 0 V with low current, and LiTime lists 0 V activation on its 20 A unit. Check with the battery maker before forcing a charge into a deeply discharged pack.

Cold weather and where to charge

Battle Born says its BMS will not accept charging current below 32°F, though the battery keeps discharging down to -4°F. Victron's manual says not to charge Li-ion batteries when the battery is below 0°C (32°F). Battle Born's heated BB10012H version accepts a charge from 25°F.

In a winter outage, bring the battery somewhere above freezing to charge, or choose a self-heating battery. The charger itself has limits too: Victron lists operation from -4°F to 122°F with full output up to 86°F, and NOCO lists -4°F to 104°F.

Follow the charger maker's setup steps: NOCO says to make battery connections before plugging into AC, to operate in a well-ventilated area and not to leave the charger unattended while in use. Victron recommends a fuse or breaker close to the battery for hardwired installs.

What to look for when you buy

Multi-chemistry example: Victron Blue Smart IP65 12/10

Best for: Owners of both lithium and lead-acid batteries who want app control

Victron lists a Li-ion profile at 14.2 V with no float and 13.5 V storage, 10 A (3 A low mode), IP65, UL 1236 compliance and a 5-year warranty.

Watch out: Rated for batteries up to 100 Ah; choose the 12/15 or 12/25 for bigger banks. Never select recondition on lithium.

Simple-mode example: NOCO GENIUS10

Best for: Charging a 12 V LiFePO4 battery and a vehicle battery with one unit

NOCO lists a 12V Lithium mode at 14.6 V and 10 A for BMS-equipped batteries up to 230 Ah, IP65 housing and a 3-year warranty.

Watch out: Repair mode reaches 16.5 V and is lead-acid only. Force mode disables safety features.

Dedicated LiFePO4 example: LiTime 12V 20A charger

Best for: Faster recharges of 100 to 200 Ah LiFePO4 banks

LiTime lists 14.6 V, 20 A, pre-charge/CC/CV stages, 0 V activation, an Anderson connector and a 2-year warranty.

Watch out: LiFePO4 only. LiTime lists CE and RoHS marks; its page does not state a UL listing.

Questions people ask

Can I charge a lithium battery with a regular battery charger?
Only if it has a lithium mode or can be set to the battery maker's voltage with equalization and temperature compensation turned off, as Battle Born specifies. Never use a lead-acid repair or recondition mode.
What voltage should a 12V LiFePO4 charger put out?
Follow your battery's manual. Battle Born lists 14.2 to 14.6 V absorption for its 12 V 100 Ah battery, with a 14.7 V high-voltage cutoff.
How long does it take to charge a 100Ah lithium battery?
Using Victron's formula, about 10 hours from empty with a 10 A charger and about 5.25 hours with 20 A, excluding loads.
Can I charge a lithium battery in freezing weather?
Not a standard one. Battle Born's BMS blocks charging below 32°F, and Victron says not to charge Li-ion below 0°C. Warm the battery first or use a self-heating model.
