Choosing a bench stone for sharpening and finishing
We research products from makers' specs, manuals and safety agencies; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
Quick answer
Choose DMT D8F for a continuous diamond bench surface used dry or with water. Choose Shapton Kuromaku Orange K0702 for the medium 1000 stage, with Wine K0704 as a separate 5000 finishing stage when your edge and goal call for it. Shapton recommends Blue 1500 if you want only one stone. Start with the condition of the edge and the knife maker instructions; a fine finishing stone is not a replacement for suitable edge repair.
- DMT Dia-Sharp D8F, Fine. Best for: A continuous diamond bench surface. See options on Amazon
- Shapton Kuromaku Orange K0702, 1000. Best for: The medium stage of a water stone progression. See options on Amazon
- Shapton Kuromaku Wine K0704, 5000. Best for: Finishing after an appropriate sharpening stage. See options on Amazon
Decide what the edge needs
Before comparing stones, decide whether the edge is slightly dull, badly neglected or physically damaged. DMT's care instructions distinguish maintenance and refinement from repair, with coarser starting grades for damaged or neglected edges. A fine finishing stone answers a different problem from removing a substantial chip. Buying a whole progression does not remove the need to make that decision.
Check the knife or tool maker directions for its edge and intended sharpening method. This shortlist compares bench surfaces for appropriate ordinary blades; it does not establish compatibility with every serrated edge, ceramic blade or specialist tool. If the task is maintaining an axe with a handheld puck or file, use the separate axe sharpener guide rather than treating these rectangular bench stones as the same purchase.
Compare abrasive and role before grit labels
| Model | Maker grade | Role |
|---|---|---|
| D8F | Fine diamond | Maintenance |
| K0702 | 1000 medium | Sharpening |
| K0704 | 5000 fine | Finishing |
DMT publishes the D8F in micron and mesh terms, while Shapton names its Kuromaku grades with a different numbered range. Those labels are quoted as the makers publish them. We have no comparison establishing that DMT 600 mesh is equivalent to a particular Shapton grade, or that either stone produces a better edge for every blade.
The D8F is a continuous diamond surface. The Kuromaku options are solid stones supplied in plastic cases that can serve as holders. Choose between those approaches by the intended sharpening stage and the care you are prepared to follow. The page makes no measured speed, edge retention or finish ranking, and follows published specifications.
Choose a first stone before buying a finisher
Shapton's FAQ recommends Orange Medium 1000 with Wine Fine 5000 for normal household knives. It separately recommends Blue Medium 1500 if the buyer intends to use only one stone. That distinction matters: the two stone pairing is not the maker saying that everyone must begin with a 5000 stone, or that Orange is its universal single stone recommendation.
DMT describes Fine D8F as suitable for bringing a slightly dull edge back to condition and as a refinement step in a progression. Its separate instructions direct coarser starts for repair. Choose the D8F when that maintenance role matches the blade. If the knife has major damage, decide on a suitable repair method before adding any of the fine options on this page.
Follow the correct wetting and cleaning routine
DMT's product page permits dry use or water and says no oil is needed. Its care instructions call for removing the slurry after use, with occasional cleaning to keep the surface from clogging, and dry storage. Do not assume that the appearance of a diamond surface after its initial break in means the product is worn out; DMT describes a change in initial aggressiveness.
Shapton's FAQ gives a different routine. It says its stones do not require soaking except for a recommended first use soak of five to six minutes. It warns against soaking longer than 30 minutes, hot water and detergents. Follow that stone's full directions rather than borrowing the cleanser routine from DMT or leaving a Shapton stone in a water tub between sessions.
Plan a stable surface and appropriate flattening
DMT supplies non-skid rubber feet with D8F, and Shapton supplies a holder case with Kuromaku. Neither description is a reason to ignore the actual work surface. Set up so the stone is supported as intended and follow the knife maker's handling and sharpening directions. This buying comparison does not replace instruction in controlling a sharp blade.
Shapton recommends maintaining the flatness of its stones and discusses matching lapping equipment to the stone. Do not buy D8F as a universal flattening plate for this purpose: DMT's product guidance distinguishes sharpening stones from its designated Dia-Flat lapping products, and Shapton says it has not established compatibility with other suppliers' diamond stones. Select maintenance equipment under the respective maker directions.
Order the exact model and inspect the contents
Keep the model code beside the grade in the search. D8F is the fine single face bench stone, not a double sided model with a similar code. K0702 identifies Orange 1000 and K0704 identifies Wine 5000. A listing for a bundled set, another grade or a flattening accessory is a different purchase. Confirm both the code and the included holder or feet.
Some current Shapton offers were supplied by third party sellers at our check. Confirm the actual seller, condition and model before buying, including any regional support differences. Full warranty terms for these picks were not verified, so we make no lifetime coverage promise. For choosing the blade itself, see the pocket knife guide, then follow that blade maker's maintenance requirements.
What to look for when you buy
DMT Dia-Sharp D8F, Fine
Best for: A continuous diamond bench surface
DMT identifies D8F as its 8 inch fine Dia-Sharp bench stone, rated 25 micron / 600 mesh. The maker page and separate catalog name D8F.
Watch out: DMT says this grade is for slightly dull edges and refinement. Do not choose it solely as a fast repair tool for substantial chips.

Best for: The medium stage of a water stone progression
Shapton identifies product K0702 as Orange Medium 1000, with a 210 x 70 x 15 mm stone. Its separate FAQ names Orange 1000 for household knives.
Watch out: This is one stage, not a promise that every damaged edge can be restored easily. The maker recommends Blue 1500 for someone choosing only one stone.
See options on Amazon (opens Amazon in a new tab)Shapton Kuromaku Wine K0704, 5000
Best for: Finishing after an appropriate sharpening stage
Shapton identifies K0704 as Wine Fine 5000. Its household knife FAQ pairs Orange 1000 sharpening with Wine 5000 finishing.
Watch out: Buy it for a finishing role, not because the largest number must be the right starting point. It is not the first pick for a damaged or neglected edge.

- Is the higher grit number always the better purchase?
- No. Choose the stage the edge needs. Shapton calls 5000 a finishing stone, and DMT directs coarser starting grades for damaged or neglected edges.
- Do Shapton stones need soaking?
- The maker recommends five to six minutes before first use and says routine soaking is unnecessary. Its FAQ warns against soaking longer than 30 minutes.
- Can D8F be used without oil?
- Yes. DMT permits dry sharpening or water on D8F and says no oil is needed.
- Can I use a diamond bench stone as a flattening plate?
- Do not assume that any diamond sharpener is suitable. DMT distinguishes designated Dia-Flat products, and Shapton has not established compatibility with other makers diamond stones.
