Quick answer

The inReach Mini 2 is a 3.5 ounce satellite communicator. It sends and receives texts, shares your location and sends an interactive SOS over the Iridium network when there is no cell service. Garmin rates it at up to 14 days of battery at a 10-minute tracking interval with a full sky view, up to 30 days at 30 minutes, and up to a year powered off. It needs an active satellite plan to work. In December 2025 Garmin added the inReach Mini 3 Plus, with a color touchscreen, 30-second voice messages and photos.

Why a satellite messenger belongs in a prep kit

Storms, wildfires and earthquakes can knock out cell towers just when you need to reach family. A satellite communicator does not use those towers. Garmin says you can send and receive text messages to SMS and email, message other inReach devices, exchange locations and send an interactive SOS from the Mini 2. At 3.5 ounces, it fits in any go-bag.

Tree cover makes a big difference. Garmin's own figures drop from 14 days to 4 under moderate cover at the same setting. For emergency standby, keep it charged and switched off, and turn tracking on only when you need it. The 12 V cable in the box lets you top it up from a vehicle.

The subscription you need

Garmin says an active satellite plan is required to access the Iridium network and communicate with the Mini 2. Without one, it cannot message or send SOS. Pick a plan before an emergency, test a message from your yard, and save your emergency contacts on the device. Garmin also notes that some jurisdictions regulate or prohibit satellite communication devices, and that users must know and follow local laws where they use it.
