Choose a cellular trail camera to watch property remotely

Quick answer
A cellular trail camera takes a photo or video when something moves and sends it to your phone over a cell network, so you can check a gate, cabin, barn or back lot when you are away. Tactacam's Reveal X 4.0 and Pro 4.0 send 4K photos and connect to the strongest available network; the Pro adds a no-glow flash setting. Bushnell's CelluCORE 20 and CelluCORE Live use dual SIM for AT&T or Verizon, and the Live adds live video on demand. Every one needs a cellular data plan, a cell signal at the site, and 12 AA batteries or another power source.

Why a cellular trail camera fits a preparedness plan
A regular trail camera saves pictures to a card that you have to go collect. A cellular model sends them to your phone. That makes it useful for places you cannot check every day: a rural gate, a shed, a cabin, a pasture or a long driveway. Bushnell describes the CelluCORE Live as a way to see the spots you scout or the property you protect.
It is a check-in tool, not an alarm system. Photos arrive after a motion trigger, and how fast they reach you depends on the cell signal at the camera.
Check cell coverage and the data plan first
These cameras need a working cellular connection where you mount them. Tactacam says the Reveal 4.0 cameras use LTE on major cellular networks and automatically connect to the strongest available network. Bushnell says its dual SIM CelluCORE cameras connect to the strongest signal, AT&T or Verizon.
Each brand also needs a data plan. Tactacam lists data plans for its cameras and marks Live View and on-demand video as needing an additional subscription. Bushnell lists the first 30 days of service free on the CelluCORE 20. Compare plan terms on the maker's site before you buy, because the plan is an ongoing cost the camera price does not show.
Image size, night range and flash
Tactacam lists 4K (UHD) and 2.5K photos with 1080p video on both Reveal 4.0 models. The Reveal X 4.0 has a low-glow flash with a 96 ft range. The Reveal Pro 4.0 lets you choose low glow (96 ft) or no glow (80 ft).
Bushnell lists 20 MP images, a sub 1 second trigger speed and an 80 ft night and detection range on the CelluCORE 20. The CelluCORE Live lists 32 MP images, no-glow IR LEDs with a 100 ft night range and live streaming video up to 2 minutes at the touch of a button on your phone.
Power: batteries, packs and solar
Plan for batteries. Tactacam lists 12 AA batteries (not included) for the Reveal X 4.0 and Pro 4.0, with optional FlexPack R5 (5,000 mAh) and R10 (10,000 mAh) rechargeable packs and a DC 12V 2A input. Tactacam's spec table and its in-the-box list disagree on whether an AA battery pack is included, so check the listing. Bushnell lists AA power for both CelluCORE models and a removable tray for 12 AA batteries (not included) on the Live.
Both brands also sell solar versions or panels: Tactacam lists a Reveal Pro 4.0 Solar, and Bushnell sells a trail camera solar panel. Solar helps where you cannot visit to swap batteries.
Storage, GPS and setup
Tactacam lists 8GB of internal storage with an optional SD card slot and built-in GPS on the Reveal 4.0 cameras. Bushnell says the CelluCORE Live works with SD cards up to 256GB and that both CelluCORE models let you change settings from your phone and sort images by weather, wind and moon.
Mount the camera on your own land or with the owner's permission, aim it at the gate or path you want to watch, and keep it pointed away from neighbors' homes and public spaces. Recording rules vary by state and town, so check them before you set up.
Warranty
Tactacam lists a 1 year warranty from the activation date on the Reveal X 4.0 and Pro 4.0. Bushnell lists a 2 year limited warranty on the CelluCORE 20 and CelluCORE Live.
