Best fire starter tools for emergencies: layer flame, tinder and a backup

Quick answer
Ready.gov's emergency kit list includes matches in a waterproof container, and that is the right place to start. Stormproof matches light in wind and rain; UCO lists up to 25 seconds per Titan match, and says they relight after being submerged. Add a strikeable tinder such as UCO's Sweetfire, which UCO lists at up to 7 minutes of flame per piece, so damp kindling has time to catch. Then carry a ferro rod as a backup that does not run out after a dozen strikes.
Three emergency fire kits compared
| Spec | UCO Stormproof Match Kit | UCO Titan Stormproof Match Kit | UCO Fire Starting Kit Mini |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contents | 25 stormproof matches | 12 Titan matches | 12 Hurricane matches, 3 Sweetfire tabs |
| Burn time per match | Up to 15 s | Up to 25 s | 12 s |
| Total match flame | About 6.25 min | About 5 min | About 2.4 min, plus 21 min of Sweetfire |
| Case | Floating screw-top, holds up to 40 matches | Floating waterproof case, lanyard loop | Floating waterproof case |
| Strikers | Replaceable, works when wet | 3 replaceable | 1 replaceable |
| Weight | Not captured | 2.0 oz | 1.1 oz |
Totals are simple arithmetic from UCO's per-match figures: 25 x 15 s, 12 x 25 s, and 12 x 12 s plus 3 x 7 minutes.
Build the kit in layers
- Primary flame: stormproof matches in a waterproof case. UCO says its matches ignite in high wind and relight after being dropped in water.
- Tinder that buys time: UCO's Stormproof Sweetfire points are bagasse, a sugarcane by-product, infused with vegetable wax. UCO says each strikes on the box and burns up to 7 minutes, even in wind or damp conditions.
- A no-fuel backup: a ferro rod throws sparks thousands of times; see our ferro rod guide for strike counts and technique.
- Natural tinder plan: Smokey Bear lists small twigs, dry leaves, grass and needles as tinder; carry some dry tinder in a sealed bag in case everything outside is wet.
Why burn time matters
A match has to stay lit long enough for tinder to catch. A 25 second Titan match gives more time than a 12 second Hurricane match, which helps with cold fingers or damp wood. UCO lists the Sweetfire at up to 7 minutes even in wind or damp conditions, far longer than any match.
Plan by fire starts, not match count. UCO's Mini kit, for example, pairs 12 matches with 3 Sweetfire tabs, enough for three tinder-assisted starts.
Storage and refills
- Keep it sealed: UCO's cases are waterproof and float; store matches in them rather than loose in a pack.
- Spare strikers: the Titan kit includes three replaceable strikers; check that a striker remains in each case.
- Refill boxes: UCO sells boxes of 25 stormproof matches and 25 Titan matches to restock cases.
- Where to keep kits: UCO pitches its Mini for glove boxes, bug-out bags and storm kits. Keep one with your emergency supplies and one in your vehicle kit.
Using fire tools safely during an outage
A few rules matter most when you use these tools at home:
- Light outdoors or in an appliance: use them for a camp stove, grill or an outdoor fire, and follow local burn rules first.
- Prefer flashlights to candles: CPSC's hurricane safety alert advises using flashlights instead of candles, and never leaving a candle burning unattended.
- Keep matches from children: store kits sealed and out of reach.
- Have water ready: keep water and a shovel near any outdoor fire, and drown it fully before leaving.
