Quick answer

A 100 lb propane tank needs a safe delivery, outdoor placement and refill plan before purchase. The capacity refers to propane weight, not the complete filled cylinder. Confirm the exact valve arrangement with your propane provider and appliance installer. Do not assume a 100-pound cylinder can travel inside a car or that a larger tank makes an appliance suitable for indoor use.

Read capacity and tare weight as different figures

Manchester's DOT catalog lists model 1428 with 100 lb propane capacity and 70 lb tare weight. Tare means the empty cylinder weight. Adding those catalog figures gives about 170 lb for the cylinder plus its rated propane load, before any separate handling equipment. Confirm the actual cylinder markings and have the supplier determine its permitted fill.

This is a handling estimate, not a filling procedure or a requirement to add that amount to a partly filled tank. A 100 lb label does not mean 100 gallons, nor does it mean a filled cylinder weighs only 100 lb.

The gallon figures also need care. Manchester lists 22.9 gallons of propane capacity for its 100 lb model and separately identifies water capacity. Flame King's selected 100 lb pages list 25 gallons simply as capacity. The pages do not establish a shared basis for that difference. Do not use the unexplained larger figure as a propane filling target or assume water capacity is fuel capacity.

If moving the filled assembly would exceed your safe handling ability or available equipment, ask a propane supplier about delivery and a suitable service arrangement before choosing the cylinder.

Choose a valve arrangement the provider can service

Flame King says both selected models ship empty and pre-purged. Empty means fuel still needs arranging; it does not remove the supplier's responsibility to check cylinder condition and filling suitability.

The multi-valve model includes a service valve, filler with back-check and pressure-relief function. The maker describes on-site refilling capability, but that does not promise a delivery company will accept every installation or reach every location. Confirm its access, equipment and service policy before ordering.

Have the appliance installer specify the complete compatible fuel connection, pressure regulation and installation. A POL connection by itself does not establish the appliance's requirements. Do not replace valves, improvise adapters or copy a smaller grill-cylinder connection merely because the tanks hold the same fuel.

Settle transport before collecting a filled cylinder

PERC's US propane safety booklet says closed-bodied vehicles must not carry cylinders larger than 45 lb capacity. A 100 lb cylinder falls outside that stated limit. Its ability to fit physically inside an SUV, van or car is therefore not a suitable collection plan.

The booklet separately describes open-cargo-bed transport and says state or local restrictions may also apply. Ask the propane retailer to confirm the lawful vehicle, route, load and restraint arrangement for the actual trip, or arrange delivery. An open bed alone does not settle every transport requirement.

For cylinder handling and transport, PERC directs users to secure cylinders upright so they cannot fall, shift or roll, keep them away from ignition sources and never transport a leaking cylinder. Drive directly to the destination and remove the cylinder promptly. Do not leave it in a parked vehicle.

Flame King's product copy broadly describes transport in the US and Canada as safe. That marketing statement does not override the cylinder-size, vehicle and local restrictions in the safety guidance. Confirm the actual transport plan rather than treating a manufacturing approval as permission for any trip.

Use outdoor storage and a properly planned operating location

PERC says to keep propane cylinders outside and away from ignition sources and additional heat. It advises against use or storage in enclosed areas such as basements, garages, sheds and tents. Even a cylinder described as empty can retain hazardous propane.

Have the propane provider and qualified installer select the location for the exact system, including required separation, access and protection. This guide does not assign a universal setback to every 100 lb cylinder installation. Tank type, appliance arrangement and local requirements need confirmation at the site.

Keep spare cylinders away from propane appliances. Close the valve when an appliance is not in use or the cylinder is disconnected, following the provider's instructions. Do not use a storage location that exposes the cylinder to a heater or fire.

Fuel storage and appliance approval are separate decisions. PERC warns against using a barbecue grill indoors or heating a room with an oven or range. A larger propane supply does not change those limits. Have appliances maintained on their prescribed schedule and use the required detectors; propane-gas detection and carbon-monoxide detection serve different purposes.

Have a qualified provider check condition and dates

Before arranging a refill, ask whether the location fills this cylinder size and valve type, whether it offers delivery, and how it handles inspection or overdue qualification. Do not assume a small-cylinder exchange service provides those services for a 100 lb tank.

PHMSA's cylinder safety poster says not to fill cylinders with excessive corrosion or pitting, dents, bulges, cuts, cracks, damaged protective parts, or a defective or leaking valve or pressure-relief device. Check visible condition, then have the filling professional assess the markings and eligibility.

Manufacturing dates and requalification markings matter separately. Manchester's catalog summarizes subsequent DOT requalification as five-year periods, while PHMSA's poster distinguishes periods by inspection method. Do not use that simplified catalog sentence as a rule for every cylinder. An approved requalifier should determine the applicable method and due date for the actual marked cylinder.

Do not repair, modify or continue using a cylinder that a professional rejects. PERC specifically says not to repair or modify propane cylinders and to contact a qualified professional for service. Use the propane retailer or an appropriate local disposal program for an unwanted or damaged cylinder, rather than household trash.

Respond to a suspected leak without improvising repairs

PERC identifies propane odor, hissing, a visible propane cloud or flames at the cylinder as possible leak signs. Avoid smoking, vaping, open flames and sparks. Leave the area and call emergency services from safely away. Never transport a leaking cylinder to seek a repair.

The booklet gives only a conditional valve-closing instruction when there are no flames or visible cloud at the cylinder. Do not approach a cylinder through a dangerous situation or delay getting away to attempt a shutdown. Have a qualified professional inspect the cylinder and appliance before using them again.

Arrange the refill and monitoring routine with the supplier. If the system runs out of propane or service is interrupted, PERC calls for a propane retailer or qualified professional to check for leaks, restore service and handle pilot lighting as needed. Do not simply reconnect an unknown system and resume use.

Keep the provider's contact information and the appliance instructions available to everyone who uses the system. A purchase is ready for use only when its safe handling, fuel service and complete installation have been addressed.
