Choose recovery boards by winter limits and carrying space

Quick answer

Choose MAXTRAX MKII for colder trips: its instructions allow temperatures down to minus 20 degrees Celsius and vehicles up to 5000 kilograms. Choose TRED Pro TREDPROMGO for axle specific load planning: its maker publishes a 2250 kilogram axle limit and 4500 kilogram vehicle limit, with an operating range from minus 15 to 70 degrees Celsius. MKII therefore has the lower documented cold limit. Check packed dimensions and supplied instructions before ordering. Both are recovery boards for suitable sand, mud or snow situations, not tire chains for road driving or a guarantee of safe recovery.

Our picks at a glance

Compare the picks and what to watch out for

Recovery boards answer a different winter problem

These picks concern recovering traction after a vehicle becomes stuck in a suitable setting. They are different from a snow brush, windshield cover or a road traction device fitted to a tire. Confirm that this is the actual problem you are trying to solve before adding large boards to a winter kit.

We compared published maker and official distributor information, not a recovery trial. MAXTRAX describes its MKII as reinforced nylon and TRED describes the Pro as a dual composite design. Those construction descriptions do not establish that one will recover a heavier vehicle, tolerate more wheelspin or outperform the other in your snow conditions.

PairStack, in.Cold limit
MKII3.5−20°C
TRED Pro3.35−15°C

Check cold limits before packing for winter

MAXTRAX’s use instructions exclude temperatures below minus 20 degrees Celsius and vehicles weighing more than 5000 kilograms. They also prohibit using the boards as a bridge or ramp, or on hard and rocky surfaces. Do not apply a general recovery board label outside those stated conditions.

ARB’s exact TREDPROMGO page gives a range from minus 15 degrees Celsius to 70 degrees Celsius, and a vehicle weight rating up to 9900 pounds. The TRED maker page separates a per axle limit of 2250 kilograms from a total vehicle limit of 4500 kilograms. Treat the axle and vehicle figures as different limits, not interchangeable ones.

If your expected conditions are colder than the published lower limit, do not assume a board is suitable because the product photograph shows snow. Confirm the current instructions for the actual supplied model. These temperature statements are material use limits, not a guarantee that a road or recovery location is safe.

Make room for the pair and the mounting hardware

MAXTRAX’s black MKII page lists 45 by 13 by 3.5 inches in its specification block and says the pair stacks at 3.5 inches. Its text also describes individual height and stacked height in overlapping wording. Confirm the complete packed drawing if roof clearance or an enclosed storage space is tight.

ARB gives the TRED Pro a single board size of 45.67 by 12.99 by 2.56 inches and a stacked pair height of 3.35 inches. These are board figures, not the space required by a carry bag, mounting bracket, locking hardware or roof rack. Plan that whole assembly before buying.

Write down where the boards will be carried and how they can be reached when the vehicle is loaded. Check the rack or mounting system’s instructions and weight restrictions separately. A board’s mounting hole pattern does not establish that a universal bracket fits, that a roof rack can carry it or that the installed load is secure.

Both makers also list an 85 millimeter stacked pair height, despite the differing inch figures above. Do not treat the rounded inch values as proof that one pair will clear a tight space that the other will not. Obtain the current packed drawing and include the mounting hardware.

Do not choose on a wheelspin promise

MAXTRAX explicitly warns against wheelspin: it can generate enough heat to melt teeth, damage the boards and bury the vehicle further. Its instructions say wheelspin damage is not covered by warranty. This is a use restriction to understand before buying, rather than a reason to choose a particular accelerator technique from an online guide.

ARB’s TRED page uses very strong wheelspin durability language, while the Amazon feature text more cautiously describes reduced premature wear. This comparison does not turn either marketing statement into permission for uncontrolled wheelspin or a guarantee against damage. Read the supplied instructions and obtain appropriate recovery training.

A product comparison cannot assess slope, traffic, unstable ground, underbody contact or the safety of people nearby. Stop and seek suitable assistance when the setting or equipment is outside your skills or the maker’s limits. No recovery sequence, towing setup or tire pressure setting is prescribed here.

Check leashes, quantity and the exact model

MAXTRAX’s MKII maker page says a carton contains two boards and two orange telltale leashes. The black maker variant is MTX02BK and the checked Amazon listing B01ACMCUGM identifies MKII in Black. Check quantity and accessories on the actual order rather than assuming a search result for a mount is a pair of boards.

ARB’s maker distributor page identifies Monument Grey/Orange as TREDPROMGO, matching the Amazon model on B07J9MQG66. The general TRED Pro maker page says a pair includes leashes, while the Amazon ARB variant describes premium ARB leashes as optional. Confirm the included leash package for this exact variant; this guide does not promise the optional accessories.

The checked New MAXTRAX offer was sold by Unlimited Electric Motor Supply. The checked New TRED offer was sold by Addiction4WD and showed limited stock on October 17, 2026. Both are third party offers. Recheck condition, seller, delivery, return terms and maker warranty eligibility before ordering.

Build a winter kit around the actual risks

Recovery boards do not clear ice from a parked vehicle, prevent a winter road closure or replace a plan for getting help. Decide what your journey requires before comparing accessories. A large board pair is useful only if it fits the vehicle, is carried securely and is suitable for the conditions and intended use.

Our blizzard emergency kit guide addresses supplies for winter disruption. The car first aid kit guide covers a different part of vehicle preparedness. Neither changes the use limits of a recovery board or makes a hazardous journey advisable.

For the area around a parked vehicle, calcium chloride ice melt and ice melt choices around pets concern treated surfaces rather than tire recovery. Keep those jobs distinct when deciding what to buy. A material advertised for winter is not automatically appropriate for every surface or task.

Questions people ask

Are traction boards the same as tire chains?
No. These are recovery boards for suitable stuck vehicle situations. They are not tire fitted devices to leave installed for road travel.
Can I use MAXTRAX as a bridge or ramp?
The opened MAXTRAX instructions expressly prohibit bridge or ramp use. Do not substitute a recovery board for rated equipment intended for that task.
Which lower temperature limit applies?
MAXTRAX instructions exclude below minus 20 degrees Celsius. ARB’s selected TRED Pro page gives minus 15 degrees Celsius as its lower range. Confirm the current supplied instructions and stay within the model limits.
Do both selected pairs definitely include leashes?
MAXTRAX’s maker page says two telltale leashes are included. The generic TRED page and the exact ARB listing describe different leash arrangements, so confirm the selected TREDPROMGO package before ordering.
Is wheelspin damage covered by the MKII warranty?
MAXTRAX explicitly excludes damage caused by wheelspin in its use instructions. The purchase is not a promise of unlimited traction or resistance to misuse.
