Rain barrel kit: confirm the collector and the complete water path

Quick answer
Choose a rain barrel kit by the parts missing from your actual setup. Oatey Mystic 14209 is a collector system, RainReserve offers a different diverter arrangement, and Oatey 14214 is a replacement hose and plug kit for an existing system. Confirm downspout fit, barrel connections and where water goes when storage fills. These purchases do not include a barrel or make roof runoff safe to drink.
Buy the missing parts rather than assuming the kit includes a barrel
A rain barrel kit can mean a downspout collector, a set of barrel fittings or replacement hose parts. Start by listing what you already have: the storage vessel, a safe supported location, the downspout connection, the dispensing outlet and the full-barrel drainage route.
N.C. Cooperative Extension identifies the vessel, collection gutters, overflow control and a way to remove water as separate essentials. Buying a diverter does not automatically supply all of them.
This guide compares retrofit hardware and a clearly labeled replacement kit. For complete storage vessels, see our rain-barrel comparison. Decide whether you are building a new arrangement or repairing an existing one before comparing package names.
Compare a collector, a different diverter and maintenance parts
| Maker example | Documented fit or contents | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Oatey Mystic 14209 | Collector for 2 by 3-inch downspouts; 4-foot hose and outlet plug | Separate barrel, matching barrel inlet and overflow arrangement |
| RainReserve Rain Diverter listing | 2 by 3-inch or 3 by 4-inch downspouts; dual outlets | Exact bundle: the title says Diverter Only but the body lists additional parts |
| Oatey 14214 replacement kit | Replacement hose and plug for the Mystic system | For an existing compatible collector; not a new collector or barrel |
Oatey's current page mixes replacement-kit wording with the selected 14209 system description. Its linked technical selector separates 14209, the collector system, from 14214, the replacement hose and plug kit. Match the number on the actual offer.
RainReserve's page lists tubing, a barrel seal, fittings, caps and other items despite its Diverter Only title. It also says the basic kit excludes a hole saw and parts for connecting multiple barrels. Ask for an exact included-parts list; dual outlets do not mean every additional barrel connection is supplied.
Measure the downspout and the complete hose route
Identify the actual downspout dimensions and shape before ordering. Oatey specifies a rectangular 2 by 3-inch downspout for the Mystic. Do not infer compatibility with a larger rectangular or round downspout from a seller's general rainwater label.
RainReserve lists both rectangular sizes in the table above. Check the required orientation, support and installation instructions for the exact supplied diverter. A nominal size match does not settle every installation detail.
Oatey's manual identifies a 1 1/4-inch hose and calls for a matching barbed inlet on the collection container. Confirm the barrel's actual inlet rather than confusing a hose size with a threaded spigot size.
RainReserve's body lists six feet of tubing and a one-inch barrel seal, subject to the package clarification. Do not combine those figures into a promise that its tubing or seal interchanges with the Oatey assembly. Match replacement parts by maker specification.
Measure from the proposed collector position to the supported barrel, allowing a permitted route without twists or kinks. Hose length alone does not establish that the water path will work. Finalize the barrel location and support before modifying the downspout.
Plan for incoming water after storage fills
A filled barrel still needs a drainage destination. RainReserve describes automatic overflow protection on its diverter. Confirm how that feature works with the exact barrel connections and what remaining drainage route the instructions require.
Oatey instead explicitly describes using its outlet plug when the barrel is full or the hose is disconnected. The opened documents do not establish the same automatic shutoff behavior. Do not assume that every product called a diverter stops filling the barrel without attention.
The scale of the incoming water matters. Extension gives 623 gallons for one inch of rainfall over 1,000 square feet. For an illustrative 200-square-foot contributing area and half an inch of rain, that scales to about 62.3 gallons before collection losses.
An empty 50-gallon example barrel would have 12.3 gallons less capacity than that potential flow. Actual capture varies, but the calculation shows why nominal storage alone is not an overflow plan. Direct excess water safely away from the building rather than letting a new connection discharge beside the foundation.
Resolve instruction conflicts and preserve access for maintenance
Read the complete instructions before cutting. The Oatey sheet contains a material language-version difference: its English section gives a minimum twelve-inch height above the barrel top, while the French and Spanish sections indicate approximately twenty-four inches. Obtain maker clarification for the intended installation instead of guessing the cut location.
The same instructions require an attached, supported downspout and attention to sharp cut edges. Use the specified eye protection and appropriate handling precautions. If the work or access is beyond your skills, arrange installation help.
Oatey's top section can be removed for cleaning the lower collector. Leave space to reach that access point after the barrel is in place. A collector squeezed behind an immovable filled container is a poor maintenance choice.
Keep the gutters, collector, hose and barrel openings clear and inspect damaged parts. CDC identifies cleaning, repair and regularly emptying barrels as parts of system maintenance. Debris separation is not a reason to abandon those jobs.
Check how collection will be disabled and the barrel drained before freezing conditions. Oatey identifies its plug for winter downtime. RainReserve's included-parts wording lists winterization caps, but obtain the current full instructions for their use with the actual arrangement.
Keep the garden collection system separate from drinking water
Use these retrofit choices for non-drinking outdoor purposes, such as watering ornamental plants. CDC warns that roof runoff can contain germs and chemicals even when it looks clear. A debris collector does not establish that the stored water is safe for drinking or food preparation.
A first-flush diverter is another distinct component. CDC describes it as directing the first runoff away from storage, with its required diversion amount depending on the contributing roof. Do not assume that a product's general diverter name establishes that function or treatment of the collected water.
Protect the openings from insects and keep children and pets away from stored water. Follow the selected barrel's lid and screening requirements as well as the kit instructions. Confirm that the support can hold the fully loaded container.
Keep rainwater apart from drinking-water pipes and treated-water supplies. Check local collection and drainage requirements, then use the Amazon searches below to match the exact product role, model and parts. A correctly selected replacement kit can be useful maintenance equipment, but it cannot supply a collector that was never there.
What to look for when you buy
Collector system: Oatey Mystic 14209
Best for: A compatible rectangular downspout and separately planned barrel arrangement
The maker documents the two-piece collector, hose and outlet plug, with cleaning access.
Watch out: Check the exact product number, provide the barrel and matching inlet, and resolve the manual height discrepancy before cutting. Do not assume automatic full-barrel shutoff.

- Does a rain barrel kit include the storage barrel?
- Not necessarily. Oatey expressly excludes the collection barrel, and RainReserve also says its barrel is not included. Read the exact parts list rather than relying on the word kit.
- Will a diverter automatically stop filling a full barrel?
- Check the exact design. RainReserve describes automatic overflow protection. Oatey tells the user to use its outlet plug when the barrel is full; its opened documents do not establish equivalent automatic behavior.
- Can I use a replacement hose kit for a new installation?
- Only if the rest of the required system is already supplied and compatible. Oatey 14214 is replacement hose and plug equipment; 14209 is the collector system.
- Does a downspout debris collector make rainwater drinkable?
- No drinking-water safety follows from debris separation. Follow CDC guidance on safe uses and keep this garden-water system separate from potable-water pipes and household drinking reserves.
