Presto Precise digital pressure canner: two sizes, one set of rules

Quick answer
The Presto Precise is a plug-in pressure canner that uses a temperature sensor and timer instead of a dial you watch. The 12 quart 02144 pressure cans 5 quarts but boiling-water cans only pints and smaller; the extra-tall 23 quart 02153 handles 7 quarts both ways. Presto says no altitude adjustment is needed for pressure canning. Penn State Extension reports that NCHFP cannot independently verify Presto's research, so follow only the canner's own manual and recipes.
12 quart vs 23 quart at a glance
| Spec | Presto Precise 02144 | Presto Precise 02153 |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid capacity | 12 quarts | 23 quarts |
| Pressure canning, regular mouth | 5 quarts, 8 pints, 10 half-pints | 7 quarts, 20 pints, 26 half-pints |
| Boiling-water canning, regular mouth | 8 pints, 10 half-pints; no quarts | 7 quarts, 10 pints, 13 half-pints |
| Power | 120 V AC, 1,485 W | 120 V AC, 1,100 W |
| Size (W x D x H) | 17.00 x 14.00 x 16.00 in | 17.30 x 15.50 x 17.00 in |
| Weight, empty | 20.50 lb | 13.87 lb |
| Pot | Removable PFAS-free pot | Heavy-gauge polished aluminum |
| Warranty | 1-year limited | 1-year limited |
The 02144's manual says it is not tall enough for quart or 1.5-pint jars under the required 1 inch of water in boiling-water mode. If you put up quarts of tomatoes or fruit, the 02153 is the one Presto markets as extra tall for quarts in both methods. Its 20 pint and 26 half-pint counts require double-decking jars.
How the sensor changes the job
A stovetop canner asks you to vent, read a gauge, adjust the burner and time the process. Presto's spec sheet says the Precise automates those steps:
- It vents for the time needed to remove air from the canner and the jars.
- A temperature sensor detects the processing temperature and holds it for the set time; the manual names 240°F as the temperature that destroys harmful spores.
- In boiling-water mode, it detects the boil and holds it for the required time.
- It preheats jars and keeps them hot until you fill them.
Presto says no altitude adjustment is needed for pressure canning, but boiling-water times still increase with altitude, using the chart in the manual. You still choose the method, set the processing time from a tested recipe and install the regulator at the right step. The 02144 manual also notes there is no minimum number of jars.
What USDA and NCHFP actually say
Presto's pages describe the Precise as the first digital pressure canner that meets USDA home canning guidelines, with an asterisk: USDA and the National Center for Home Food Preservation (NCHFP) provide guidelines but neither agency certifies or approves home canning equipment.
Penn State Extension's pressure canner update, revised September 13, 2024, adds the independent view. It reports that NCHFP has no information on the type or extent of Presto's research and cannot independently verify the company's statements, and so recommends following only the digital canner's manual, not instructions from other sources. Penn State does not extend that to other appliances sold as combination canners and cookers; it says it cannot recommend them for lack of safety research.
In practice: use the recipes and times in the Presto Precise book, and do not swap in stovetop-canner instructions or another appliance's settings.
Error codes worth knowing before canning day
The 02144 manual lists codes that sound an alarm and stop the process:
| Code | Meaning | What Presto says to do |
|---|---|---|
| E1, E2, E4, E5 | Damaged, tampered with or defective | Unplug and call Presto Consumer Service |
| E3 | Overheated from too little or no water | Unplug, let pressure drop if needed, cool 15 minutes, add water to the 3-quart fill line, restart |
| E10, E20 | Pressure built during jar warming or venting because the regulator was on too early | Unplug, wait for the cover lock to drop, remove the regulator, restart |
| E21 | Regulator not installed after venting | Unplug, open and cool 15 minutes, then restart per the manual |
Note the code before unplugging. Presto's pages also list an alert symbol that flags an incomplete canning process; treat any jar from an interrupted run by the manual's instructions rather than assuming it is safe.
Kitchen setup and care
- Countertop only. The manual says not to set it on or near a hot burner or in an oven, and to can only in the removable pot.
- Canning only. The 02144 manual states it is intended only for pressure and boiling-water canning, not for cooking.
- Power. If you need an extension cord, the manual calls for a 3-wire grounded cord rated at least 13 amps and no longer than 10 feet. At 1,485 W on 120 V, the 02144 draws about 12.4 A, close to that 13 A cord minimum.
- Gaskets. Replace the sealing ring, air vent/cover lock gasket and sensor gasket when they turn hard or deformed; Presto counts them as routine maintenance outside the warranty.
- Unsealed jars. Refrigerate and use within 3 days, freeze, or reprocess within 24 hours with new lids, per the manual.
Because it needs wall power, plan canning sessions for normal days, not during an outage.
