Micro inverter: compare the whole panel-level system
We research products from makers' specs, manuals and safety agencies; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
Quick answer
A micro inverter converts solar-panel DC into AC near the modules. Compare how many panels each unit serves, how its inputs are tracked, the exact electrical limits and the monitoring equipment required. Enphase IQ8A serves one module, APsystems DS3 serves two, and Hoymiles HMS-2000-4T-NA serves four. Choose through a qualified system design, including utility approval and any required backup equipment.
Begin with the roof layout and the system you want
Ask the designer to show how the proposed equipment maps to the actual panels. A device serving several modules can still have independent maximum power point tracking, or MPPT, for those inputs. Count the module inputs and trackers rather than assuming every micro inverter sits behind only one panel.
DOE explains that microinverters allow individual-panel operation, which can help when some modules are shaded. That general benefit does not establish a yield figure for your roof. Have the designer assess actual shading, orientation and the compatible equipment before treating a brochure comparison as a production forecast.
Also specify whether you want ordinary grid-connected generation or a system intended to supply selected loads during an outage. Those are different design requirements. Resolve that choice before buying individual devices from an online listing.
Compare module count and tracking separately
| Exact model example | Module arrangement | Documented distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Enphase IQ8A-72-2-US | One PV module per microinverter | Individual-module MPPT; Enphase system communication over AC power lines |
| APsystems DS3-880 | Two modules per microinverter | Two input channels with independent MPPT; Zigbee communication |
| Hoymiles HMS-2000-4T-NA | Four modules per microinverter | Four MPPTs, one input per tracker; Sub-1G gateway compatibility |
For a hypothetical array of 12 modules, these formats imply 12 single-module devices, six two-module devices or three four-module devices. That is a component-count illustration, not a branch-circuit plan or an approved design.
Ask how the selected arrangement fits panel placement, cable routes and future service access. Fewer boxes alone do not prove a more reliable system, a better annual yield or easier service on your particular roof.
Keep output labels and rating conditions intact
The Enphase IQ8A data sheet distinguishes 366 VA peak output from 349 VA maximum continuous output. Those values describe different rating conditions. Use the continuous figure when that is the specification your designer is comparing rather than quietly substituting the larger peak number.
The current Hoymiles North America Rev 1.5 sheet lists 1,918 VA maximum continuous output for the HMS-2000-4T-NA. The 2000 in its model name should not be copied into a continuous-output comparison. Check the exact regional suffix and document revision.
The short APsystems DS3-880 product page lists 880 VA output without identifying the rating basis in that summary. Obtain the complete applicable data sheet for a detailed comparison. This guide does not silently label that short-page figure continuous or compare it as if it were the same measure as every other published number.
Likewise, do not confuse solar module DC watts with an inverter's AC apparent-power rating in VA. Keep units and the stated power-factor conditions in the design review.
Approve the exact panel pairing, not just its watt label
Enphase directs installers to check module compatibility against the electrical limits and its compatibility calculator. Its reviewed IQ8A sheet lists a 60V maximum DC input and a 32-45V MPPT range. Those are different limits, not alternative descriptions of a single operating point.
The same sheet distinguishes maximum continuous input current, input short-circuit current and maximum module short-circuit current. Have the designer use the correct row for the check being performed. A headline panel wattage cannot replace this review.
Hoymiles' current sheet likewise provides voltage, current and tracking limits for each exact model. Its manual requires one PV module per input and prohibits connecting batteries or other power sources to those inputs. Do not treat a solar micro inverter as a general battery inverter.
Confirm the actual connector type and approved matching equipment too. Enphase warns that its connectors must mate with the identical type and brand specified by its instructions. Visual similarity is not an electrical compatibility approval.
Include gateways, commissioning and backup configuration
Ask the installer to list the communication gateway, cables, protective equipment and commissioning work included in the proposed system. The APsystems DS3 product offer explicitly excludes accessories. Buying a microinverter does not establish that those additional pieces will arrive with it.
Hoymiles' reviewed manual specifies compatible Sub-1G gateways such as DTU-Pro-S and DTU-Lite-S. A gateway from another product family should not be assumed compatible simply because the same maker supplies it. Have the required monitoring and handover arrangements written into the proposal.
For Enphase, the IQ Gateway collects system information over the AC power lines. Backup capability depends on the complete approved system configuration. Its current manual and older data-sheet notes cover different equipment configurations, so request documentation matching the actual microinverter generation, controller and other proposed components.
Do not infer outage operation from a phrase such as microgrid-forming alone. Obtain the actual supported configuration and identify which loads it is designed to supply. Keep that question separate from routine monitoring of grid-connected production.
Choose an installer-approved offer and retain the records
Use the Amazon searches below only after the designer has identified the exact approved equipment. Confirm the regional version, model suffix, connectors, seller and included accessories. A similarly named imported unit may not match the reviewed North American equipment.
DOE describes rooftop permitting before installation, inspection afterward and the utility process before grid operation; details vary locally. Enphase and Hoymiles also require qualified installation and the applicable utility approval. An online purchase does not complete any of those steps.
Keep the array layout, module and inverter data sheets, serial-number map, commissioning record and support details together. Ask who will diagnose a monitoring problem and who handles equipment replacement. Those service arrangements are useful parts of the buying decision even when the individual unit looks straightforward.
Leave live electrical work and troubleshooting to qualified personnel. Follow the exact shutdown and service instructions; do not unplug AC or DC connectors under load or open a microinverter for repair.
What to look for when you buy
Single-module format: Enphase IQ8A-72-2-US
Best for: An installer-approved Enphase design using the exact US model and compatible modules
Its manual describes individual-module MPPT and the data sheet separates peak from continuous output.
Watch out: Check electrical pairing and the full system components. Backup and mixed-generation support depend on the actual documented configuration.
See options on Amazon (opens Amazon in a new tab)Two-module format: APsystems DS3-880
Best for: A professionally designed array that suits the documented two-input layout
The maker identifies two independent MPPT channels and Zigbee communication.
Watch out: Accessories are excluded from the reviewed product offer. Obtain the complete applicable data sheet and approved parts list before purchase.
See options on Amazon (opens Amazon in a new tab)Four-module format: Hoymiles HMS-2000-4T-NA
Best for: A qualified North American design using the matching four-input hardware and gateway
The current regional data sheet specifies four MPPTs and one module input per tracker.
Watch out: Continuous output is 1,918 VA in the reviewed sheet. Confirm the NA suffix and compatible Sub-1G gateway; inputs are for PV modules, not batteries.

- Does every micro inverter serve only one panel?
- No. The examples here include one-, two- and four-module designs. Compare the actual number of inputs and independent trackers.
- Is the HMS-2000-4T-NA rated for 2,000 VA continuously?
- The current North America Rev 1.5 data sheet lists maximum continuous output as 1,918 VA. Use the exact rating instead of interpreting the model name.
- Will a micro inverter keep my outlets on during an outage?
- Only a complete supported backup design can establish that. Have the installer document the necessary equipment, operating configuration and supported loads.
- Can I attach a battery to the Hoymiles panel input?
- No. Its reviewed manual requires one PV module per input and prohibits batteries or other power sources. Use equipment specifically approved for the intended storage system.
