Jump starter with air compressor: check the compressor too

Quick answer

A combo unit saves trunk space, but read both halves of the spec. NOCO's AX65 lists 2,000 peak amps for gas engines up to 8.0 L. Its 100 PSI compressor takes a flat tire from 0 to 40 PSI in about 2 minutes, but manual mode has a duty cycle of 5 minutes on and 30 off. Clore's lead-acid JNCAIR weighs 28.5 lb and needs recharging after every use and every 3 months. Inflate to the cold pressure on your door placard.

Two combo units and a separate compressor compared

The JNCAIR is about 4 times the weight of the AX65 (28.5 / 6.95 = 4.1), but Clore pairs it with 68 in #2 AWG cables and a 12 ft hose, against the AX65's 3 ft hose.

Duty cycle: the spec most listings skip

Small compressors must rest to cool. NOCO publishes its limits:

That is plenty for topping off a low tire, which NOCO times at about 22 seconds from 35 to 40 PSI on the AX65. Refilling several flat tires back to back takes longer once the rest periods are counted. Clore's manual says the JNCAIR's compressor has a thermal switch that can shut it down if it gets too hot, then resets itself after cooling.

Lithium vs lead-acid: weight and upkeep

Whichever you choose, set a reminder to check the charge; a jump pack that sat flat in the trunk will not help.

Using one at the roadside

  1. Jump start: follow your unit's clamp order and safety steps. Clore says that if the engine does not start within 6 seconds, let the unit cool for 3 minutes before trying again.
  2. Find the right pressure: NHTSA says to use the cold inflation pressure on your vehicle's tire information placard or certification label. Cold means not driven for at least 3 hours.
  3. Warm tires: if you have been driving, NHTSA says to fill to the placard pressure anyway and recheck once the tire is cold.
  4. Set and fill: on the AX65 and AIR20, set the target and NOCO's auto-shutoff stops at that pressure.
  5. Recharge: top the unit up before putting it away.

What to look for when you buy

Compact lithium combo: NOCO Boost Air AX65

Best for: One small box that jump starts, inflates and charges a phone

NOCO lists 2,000 A for gas engines to 8.0 L and diesel to 6.0 L, a 100 PSI, 67 L/min compressor with auto-shutoff, 60 W USB-C and 6.95 lb.

Watch out: Manual-mode duty cycle is 5 minutes on and 30 off; the hose is 3 ft.

Heavy-duty lead-acid combo: Clore Jump-N-Carry JNCAIR

Best for: Trucks and farm vehicles where long cables and a long hose matter

Clore lists 1,700 peak and 425 cranking amps, 68 in #2 AWG cables, a 12 ft coiled hose, a built-in automatic charger and a 12 V outlet.

Watch out: It weighs 28.5 lb and Clore says to recharge after every use and every 3 months in storage.

Separate compressor: NOCO AIR20

Best for: Pairing with a jump starter you already own

NOCO lists 100 PSI, 47 L/min, 0 to 40 PSI in 2.5 minutes, auto-shutoff and a 20 ft cord with clamps for the vehicle battery.

Watch out: It draws up to 22 A at 12 V and cannot jump start; duty cycle is 15 minutes on and 45 off at 30 PSI.

Questions people ask

Are jump starters with air compressors any good?
They can be, if both halves fit your needs; check the engine rating, airflow, maximum PSI and duty cycle the maker lists.
How long does a jump starter air compressor take to fill a tire?
NOCO lists 2.0 minutes from 0 to 40 PSI on the AX65 and about 22 seconds to top off from 35 to 40 PSI.
How often should I charge a jump starter with compressor?
Follow the maker; Clore says to recharge its lead-acid JNCAIR after every use and every 3 months in storage.
What PSI should I inflate my tires to?
NHTSA says to use the cold pressure on your vehicle's tire information placard or certification label.
