Choosing a firearm cleaning solvent for the intended job
We research products from makers' specs, manuals and safety agencies; we do not run hands-on tests. Links to Amazon may earn us a commission at no cost to you. How this works.
Quick answer
Compare Hoppe's No. 9 in the 916 pint bottle or 932 quart bottle when you want that maker's bore cleaner. Compare Breakthrough Military Grade Solvent BTS-32OZ when you want its cleaner and degreaser. The two Hoppe's sizes contain the same product; they are quantity choices. Choose by the firearm manual, the fouling you need to address and the exact product safety directions, not by scent or a broad all purpose claim.
- Hoppe's No. 9, 916 pint bottle. Best for: A smaller bottle of the original bore cleaner. See options on Amazon
- Hoppe's No. 9, 932 quart bottle. Best for: The same bore cleaner in a larger container. See options on Amazon
- Breakthrough Military Grade Solvent BTS-32OZ. Best for: Comparing a cleaner and degreaser from another maker. See options on Amazon
Identify the cleaning job first
Begin with the maintenance directions for your exact firearm. A product used for routine bore fouling, a degreaser and a lubricating oil are different purchases. A familiar brand may sell all of them in similar bottles. Write down the actual formula name before comparing container sizes or placing an order.
The Hoppe's maker page describes carbon, powder and lead fouling. Breakthrough describes oil, grease and carbon build up. Those are the stated jobs used for this shortlist. This guide does not infer that either formula removes every deposit, is suitable for every finish or replaces another step required by the firearm maker.
Compare formula and container
| Option | Maker role | Check |
|---|---|---|
| No. 9 916 | Bore cleaner | Pint bottle |
| No. 9 932 | Same cleaner | Quart bottle |
| BTS-32OZ | Cleaner, degreaser | Exact formula |
The Hoppe's options intentionally compare quantities of the same original product. A quart is not a stronger version. Breakthrough adds another maker and another stated cleaning role. We compared documentation and current listings; we have not compared cleaning speed, residue removal or smell in use.
Keep a modest quantity if that better suits your storage space and actual maintenance schedule. Buying more chemical does not improve a cleaning procedure. If you need a different type of cleaner, select it from its own instructions rather than treating the larger bottle as an upgrade to a formula that does not match the job.
Read compatibility before applying a solvent
Check the firearm maker's directions for the barrel and for any surfaces a cleaner could contact. A product described as a bore cleaner does not automatically establish suitability for a stock, optic, coating, adhesive or accessory. Keep those materials separate in your purchasing checklist instead of treating firearm as one uniform surface.
Breakthrough lists compatibility claims for wood, plastics, polymers, Cerakote and hydro printing on its own product page. These remain maker claims for that exact solvent. They do not authorize mixing products, ignoring another component maker's restrictions or substituting a similarly branded cleaner. If the directions conflict or leave a material unclear, ask the relevant maker.
Safety information outranks a pleasant smell
Hoppe's current No. 9 safety sheet identifies a highly flammable liquid and vapor and hazards from swallowing, skin contact and inhalation. It directs avoiding ignition sources, appropriate ventilation and protective equipment. Read the whole current sheet and label for handling, storage, exposure and disposal information. The comparison here is not a replacement for it.
Do not choose a workspace solely because a product is described as low odor or odorless. A sensory description does not establish acceptable exposure conditions. Before buying, make sure you can follow the exact chemical directions where you intend to work. Keep solvent maintenance away from food preparation and from access by children or unauthorized people.
Keep the firearm and work area controlled
Project ChildSafe says to make certain a firearm is unloaded before cleaning and to keep ammunition away from the cleaning area. Follow the firearm maker's maintenance manual. This page deliberately compares purchasing choices rather than giving disassembly, chemical mixing or firearm alteration instructions.
A cleaning mat can be another workspace purchase, but check its own solvent compatibility and care directions. It does not make a kitchen counter an appropriate chemical work area. A cleaning kit also needs matching tools and instructions; the presence of a bottle in a kit does not prove that every included part suits your firearm.
Check the listing and delivered formula
Confirm the maker, original formula name, product code and bottle quantity together. Hoppe's sells different cleaners under related names. Breakthrough also sells several cleaning products. Similar logos are not evidence that a substituted formula has the same compatibility information or safety requirements.
Retain the label and current safety information rather than decanting a cleaner into an unidentified container. Plan secure chemical storage and disposal under the maker directions and applicable local requirements. If you cannot meet those conditions, skip the purchase and obtain qualified help with maintenance. No cleaning or corrosion prevention outcome is guaranteed by this comparison.
Full warranty terms were not verified for this comparison. Read the current terms for the exact model, seller and region before ordering.
Breakthrough's April 2025 safety sheet classifies the Military Grade Solvent as combustible and warns of an aspiration hazard. Its low odor marketing is not a reason to skip the label's protective equipment, storage or ventilation precautions.
For the broader maintenance workspace, compare the separate cleaning mat choices and check each product's own compatibility information. Search by the exact product shown in the pick card; verify original formula and container size before ordering.
What to look for when you buy
Hoppe's No. 9, 916 pint bottle
Best for: A smaller bottle of the original bore cleaner
Hoppe's describes No. 9 as a cleaner for carbon, powder and lead fouling. The maker safety sheet includes product code 916.
Watch out: It is a hazardous chemical. Read the exact label and current safety sheet; it is not a lubricating oil.

Best for: The same bore cleaner in a larger container
The maker lists a quart option and includes 932 on its No. 9 safety sheet. Choose it only when the larger quantity fits your storage needs.
Watch out: No stronger formula or better cleaning performance is claimed for the larger bottle.

Best for: Comparing a cleaner and degreaser from another maker
Breakthrough describes removal of oil, grease and carbon build up without residue. Its page identifies BTS-32OZ and UPC 852712005022.
Watch out: Do not read odorless marketing as a ventilation exemption. Follow the exact label and obtain its current safety information before use.

- Are the two Hoppe's options different formulas?
- They are size choices for original No. 9. The 916 and 932 identifiers appear on its safety sheet; the larger bottle is not rated as stronger.
- Is bore cleaner the same as lubricating oil?
- No. Select each maintenance product by its own stated purpose and the firearm manual. Do not substitute a cleaner for lubrication required by that manual.
- Does odorless mean ventilation is unnecessary?
- No such conclusion is supported here. Follow the exact product label and safety information regardless of its smell.
- Can I use these on any finish?
- Do not assume universal compatibility. Check the firearm, component and cleaner makers' directions for the exact materials involved.
