Choose a dog life jacket for boats, paddling and floods

Quick answer
A dog life jacket adds buoyancy and gives you a handle to lift your dog out of the water. Ruffwear's Float Coat uses foam panels placed for a natural swimming position, a strong low-profile lift handle and a telescoping neck closure. The Confluence is a harness-style life jacket with six adjustment points, a second rear handle and a tow loop for a leash. Both size by girth around the widest part of the rib cage, from XXS 13-17 in to XL 36-42 in.

Why a dog needs a life jacket
A life jacket adds buoyancy and gives you a handle to grab. Ruffwear designs both jackets here with foam panels placed to support a natural swimming position and a handle for helping your dog out of the water. For preparedness, that matters if you evacuate by boat or have to move a pet through flood water.
Ready.gov says that if local officials ask you to evacuate, your pet should evacuate too, and that pets left behind may end up lost, injured or worse. See our pet carrier guide for the rest of a pet evacuation kit.

Handles and lifting
Ruffwear places the Float Coat's handle to help dogs out of the water. The Confluence adds a second handle at the rear, which Ruffwear says gives extra lifting support, and positions the main handle for getting a dog onto a boat or paddle board.
If you will lift a heavy dog over a gunwale or onto a dock, two handles let you lift the front and back together.
Fit and sizing
Ruffwear sizes both jackets by girth around the widest part of the rib cage, with a back length guide: XXS 13-17 in, XS 17-22 in, S 22-27 in, M 27-32 in, L 32-36 in and XL 36-42 in.
Check the fit on dry land before you go near the water, then lift gently by the handle to make sure the jacket stays in place.
Pack it with the pet kit
Ready.gov's pet emergency kit list includes several days of food and water, medicine, a first aid kit, a collar with ID tag and a backup leash, copies of registration papers and a traveling bag, crate or sturdy carrier. If you live near water or in a flood zone, add the life jacket to that kit so it is ready when you need it.
The Confluence's tow loop lets you clip a leash directly to the jacket, so you do not need a separate harness underneath.
Materials and visibility
Ruffwear lists PVC-free foam in the Float Coat and layered PVC-free and CLPE foam in the Confluence, with an 800D ballistic shell on the Confluence. Both use water-stable webbing that Ruffwear says holds its shape when wet, and the Float Coat's buckles are sheltered to make clipping easier.
Both jackets have reflective trim and a loop for Ruffwear's Beacon safety light, which helps if you are on the water at dawn, dusk or in a storm. Choose a bright color if you can.
Which one to buy
Choose the Float Coat for a simple, proven vest for swimming and boating. Choose the Confluence if you paddle board or kayak with your dog, want a leash point, or need the extra rear handle to lift a heavier dog.
Put the jacket on before your dog gets near the water, check every buckle, and stay close enough to grab the handle. Rinse the jacket in fresh water after salt or flood water and let it dry before storing.
