Diesel generators for home backup

Quick answer
Diesel generators come in two very different sizes for homes. A portable diesel like Generac's XD5000E makes 5,000 running watts and runs 32.4 hours at half load on its 12 gallon tank. A diesel standby unit like Generac's 20 kW Protector RD02025 sits on its own double-walled fuel tank, runs at 1800 rpm and weighs 1,528 pounds. Generac advertises an extended-tank option with over 2 days of full-load runtime. Diesel suits homes without natural gas that want long, fuel-independent run times. Both need careful fuel storage and professional connection.
Two kinds of diesel backup
| Portable diesel (Generac XD5000E) | Diesel standby (Generac RD02025) | |
|---|---|---|
| Output | 5,000 running watts | 20,000 running watts |
| Engine | Yanmar 435cc air-cooled | 2.5 L four-cylinder in-line, 1800 rpm |
| Fuel | 12 gal tank, 32.4 h at 50% load | Double-walled base tank. Extended-tank option advertised at 2+ days full load. |
| Weight | Portable frame, wheel kit sold separately | 1,528 lb |
| Connection | L14-30R outlet to a transfer switch | Automatic transfer switch, professional install |
| Warranty | 2 year limited | 5 year limited |
Why choose diesel
- Run time. A big diesel tank goes a long way. The XD5000E's 12 gallons last 32.4 hours at half load, about 0.37 gallons an hour.
- No gas line needed. Rural homes without natural gas can store their own fuel on site. Generac's Protector base tank is UL 142 listed and double-walled, with external vent and fill.
- Stable power. Generac says the Protector's isochronous electronic governor holds voltage within plus or minus 1%.
- Shared fuel. If you already store diesel for other equipment, verify that the actual fuel specification also meets the selected generator manual. A shared fuel name alone does not establish compatibility.
The trade-offs
Diesel standby units are big. The RD02025 is 81 by 31 by 50 inches and 1,528 pounds. Compare that with Generac's air-cooled 22 kW gas and propane unit at 451 pounds. That means a substantial pad, crane or equipment for placement, and a dealer install. Fuel management is also on you. The Department of Energy's biodiesel guide says spec-minimum fuel is expected to keep quality for up to one year in clean, dry storage, so a large tank needs rotation or treatment and periodic checks. Portable diesels are simpler but still heavy, and Generac's XD5000E sheet lists no carbon monoxide shut-off.
Sizing either type
Choose from the actual load, voltage, starting requirements and connection plan rather than square footage or generator fuel alone. The RD02025 page lists 20,000 running watts and notes single- and three-phase configurations in the product family. Have the installer confirm the exact supplied configuration against the building service and intended circuits.
For the portable example, the XD5000E sheet lists 5,000 running watts and 5,500 motor-starting watts. Those ratings do not guarantee simultaneous operation of every refrigerator, pump and furnace. Obtain the actual requirements and determine which loads may start together.
The sheet's 32.4-hour runtime is specified at half rated load. Half of 5,000 W is 2,500 W, not a full-output runtime promise. Dividing 12 gallons by 32.4 hours gives approximately 0.37 gallon per hour at that published condition. Do not extend that consumption rate to all loads or to the separate standby unit.
Living with a diesel standby unit
Generac builds its Protector diesel line to be serviced on site. Its page lists an external viewing window to check generator status and breaker position, and removable doors for service and fuel fill access. It also lists a UL/CUL 2200-listed generator on a UL/CUL 142-listed double-walled base tank, and an Evolution controller. The 20 kW unit takes 6.87 quarts of oil. Plan for routine service by a dealer, regular fuel checks and top-ups, and test runs on the maker's schedule. Ask the installer about the fuel delivery plan, too. Confirm the fuel supplier and refill arrangements before relying on an extended-tank runtime claim. The tank option and the expected electrical load must match that claim.
Placement and safety
Diesel exhaust contains carbon monoxide. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's rules for portable units are outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, never in a garage, basement or shed, and exhaust pointed away from openings. Standby units are placed by an installer to the maker's clearances and local code. Any connection to house wiring needs a transfer switch. NFPA says it should be installed by a qualified electrician to the National Electrical Code.
NFPA also says to turn off a portable generator and let it cool before adding fuel. A long advertised runtime does not authorize refueling a hot engine. Use the exact generator instructions for operation and the applicable installed-standby requirements for a permanently connected unit.
What to look for when you buy
Portable diesel generator (example: Generac XD5000E)
Best for: Essentials through long outages with few refuelings
Generac lists 5,000 running watts, a Yanmar air-cooled diesel, 32.4 hours at half load on 12 gallons and an L14-30R outlet.
Watch out: No CO shut-off is listed, and the wheel kit is sold separately.

Best for: Whole-home backup without a natural gas line
Generac lists 20,000 running watts, a 2.5 L four-cylinder at 1800 rpm, a UL 142 double-walled base tank, plus or minus 1% voltage regulation and a 5 year limited warranty.
Watch out: It weighs 1,528 pounds and needs a dealer install, permits and fuel management.

Best for: Keeping stored diesel usable
DOE's biodiesel guide says spec-minimum fuel keeps quality up to about a year in clean, dry storage, and stability varies between fuels.
Watch out: Treat to label dose and still rotate or test the fuel.

- Are diesel generators good for home backup?
- They run a long time per tank and suit homes without natural gas. Standby diesels are large and heavy, though. Generac's 20 kW unit weighs 1,528 pounds.
- How long can a diesel generator run?
- Generac's XD5000E runs 32.4 hours at half load on 12 gallons. Generac advertises over 2 days at full load for its Protector diesel with the extended tank.
- Diesel vs natural gas standby generator?
- Natural gas units draw from your gas line and weigh far less, like Generac's 451 pound 22 kW unit. Diesel stores fuel on site in a base tank and suits homes without gas service.
- Do diesel generators need special fuel?
- Use the fuel the maker specifies, keep it clean and dry, and rotate or treat it. DOE's guide puts spec-minimum biodiesel quality at up to a year in good storage.
